NEW ULM — The New Ulm Junior Legion Gold took advantage of 11 walks, three wild pitches and two hit batters plus eight hits as they cruised by Owatonna 13-0 Thursday night in the Junior Upper Midwest Classic at Johnson Park.
The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.
Owen Castleman got the win for New Ulm, allowing just one hit while striking out seven.
Ben Herzog took the pitching loss for Owatonna. He went 1 2/3 innings and was charged with 10 runs on seven hits.
Miles Castleman had two hits and two RBIS for New Ulm, while Noah Gode and Evan Starke each had two RBIs for the Junior Gold.
New Ulm, which plays Alexandria Friday at 7 p.m. at Johnson Park, plated three runs in the bottom of the first when Owen Castleman singled and Eli Anderson reached on an Owatonna error — one of four in the game. A Ryler Collins single loaded the bases. Courtesy runner Kaden Stueber scored on a wild pitch. A Miles Castleman’s two-run single made it 3-0.
The Junior Gold then sent 13 batters to the plate in the second inning and scored seven runs on just three hits but were aided by four walks and two wild pitches for a 10-0 cushion after two innings.
Meanwhile, Castleman was in control as he allowed only a one out-single to Parker Blome, but he was quickly erased when he was thrown out trying to steal second.
New Ulm added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on four walks and no hits.
