NEW ULM — It wasn’t the most polished day in the field for the New Ulm Junior Legion Gold on Friday, but their bats more than made up for it.
In their second Junior Upper Midwest Classic tournament game, the Jr. Gold were aided by a five-run third inning that led to a 10-3 win over the Alexandria Junior Legion Red at Johnson Park.
Despite a handful errors, New Ulm didn’t let it hurt too much and got 10 hits on the day to stay in front. New Ulm had four errors in the game, while Alexandria had two.
Trevan Thordson led the Jr. Gold bats, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Kaden Stueber was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Miles Castleman was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Noah Gode had a triple and an RBI, while Parker Ranweiler added a double and two RBIs.
Ryler Collins pitched all seven innings for the Jr. Gold, allowing four hits and one walks for three runs, one earned, while striking out six.
Isaac Christensen took the loss for the Jr. Red in 2 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and four walks for nine runs, eight earned, while striking out one.
Despite Collins hitting Harlan Rehm with a pitch on the first at-bat of the night and a pair of one-out singles by Brody Jenzen and Dayton Bye to load the bases, New Ulm got out of the jam with a popout and a groundout. The Jr. Gold quickly answered for three runs in the second, with a walk to Owen Castleman leading things off before Noah Gode was hit by a pitch. Christensen forced a double play that moved Owen Castleman to third, but Thordson doubled to make it 1-0. An RBI single by miles Castleman made it 2-0 before Ranweiler’s double to left made it 3-0.
Alexandria tied it in the second in a four-hit inning that also featured a walk and an error that scored a run and led to the tying run.
Gode tripled to right field to bring home Owen Castleman for a 4-3 New Ulm lead in the bottom of the second.
The floodgates opened in the bottom of the third for New Ulm, started with a leadoff double by Thordson. A pair of one-out walks and a balk made it 5-3 before Evan Starke walked to load the bases for Stueber, who singled to right to score two more runs for an 8-3 New Ulm lead. An RBI single by Owen Castleman then made it 9-3.
New Ulm got its final run in the fourth on a groundout by Ranweiler to scored courtesy runner Cole Voges.
New Ulm plays Luverne in its final pool play game of the tournament at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Park. If New Ulm wins, it guarantees itself a Pool A bracket win. First-place and second-place pool teams play in a 6 p.m. game Saturday, with Sunday semifinals spots on the line.
