Area roundup: New Ulm Gold starts Burnsville tourney 2-0

BURNSVILLE — The New Ulm Legion Gold went 2-0 at the Burnsville Tournament on Friday, defeating Lakeville North 11-3 and Orono/Maple Plain 8-1.

Tanner Backer was the winning pitcher in Game 1 for New Ulm, striking out four while allowing one earned run on six hits in six innings of work. At the plate, Kyle Albrecht was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, while Hunter Larson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jake Finstad was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, and Dirk Haynes had two hits and an RBI.

Mitchel Hopp earned the win in Game 2, striking out five and allowing one unearned run on one hit in four innings. Josh Forstner pitched three perfect innings, striking out two. At the plate, Larson was 2 for 4 with an RBI, whiel Albrecht had two RBIs. Backer had a hit and an RBI.

New Ulm continues play in the tournament on Saturday, playing Eastview at 4 p.m.

ST. JAMES 5, SPRINGFIELD 3

ST. JAMES — Springfield Post 257 fell for the first time this summer as St. James earned a 5-3 win over them in a legion baseball game.

Leo Holvand was 1 for 2 with an RBI to lead Springfield, while Madden Lendt was 1 for 3 with a triple. Noah Mueller took the loss in six innings, allowing 12 hits and no walks for five earned runs while striking out one.

Reggie Blom got the mound win for St. James in four innings, allowing four hits and two walks for one earned run while striking out two. He also was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Sawyer Olson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Max Westman was 2 for 3 with an RBI and John Boelke was 2 for 3 with a double.

Springfield fell to 6-1 on the year with the loss.
