Gold open season with big win

WASECA — The New Ulm Legion Gold opened their summer season of baseball with an 11-0 shutout of Waseca on Monday.

A six-run third inning highlighted the game for the Gold, and a four-run fifth inning helped put things away in five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Levi Hopp led the Gold at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Kyle Albrecht was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Hunter Larson was 2 for 4 with a triple, a double and an RBI. Zach Hubbard was 1 for 2 with a double, a walk and three runs scored also for New Ulm, while Jake Finstad was 1 for 4 with three RBIs.

Dirk Haynes got the pitching win in three innings, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out six. Mitchell Hopp pitched two innings, allowing one hit and one walk while fanning three.

New Ulm is at New Prague on Tuesday night and then travels to Hutchinson for a Wednesday night game.
