Area roundup: Coil lifts top-seeded Blackhawks by MLA/C

MADELIA 3, MLA/C 2

SEARLES — The top-seeded Madelia Blackhawks stayed in the winners bracket of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament in dramatic fashion on Tuesday, earning a 3-2 walk-off win on an RBI single from Evan Coil.

The win moves Madelia on to a 5 p.m. quarterfinals game against Mankato Loyola on Thursday in Searles. MLA/C will play at New Ulm Cathedral in an elimination bracket game on Thursday.

Madelia trailed 2-0 after four innings and scored single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings before walking it off in the seventh on Coil’s big hit, a single to left to score Tony Zaleski.

Coil went 1 for 4 on the day and was just one of five Madelia hits on the day, but his hit made all the difference. Zaleski was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Zach Jacobs was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Bryce Borkenhagen was 1 for 3 and Noel Davila was 1 for 4.

Tate Becker earned the win for Madelia in 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing no hits and one walk for no runs while striking out seven.

SLEEPY EYE 8, CLEVELAND 2

SLEEPY EYE — No. 3-seeded Sleepy Eye defeated No. 6-seeded Cleveland 8-2 on Tuesday in the second round of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament.

The win moves Sleepy Eye on to a quarterfinals meeting with seventh-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s, who upset No. 2-seeded Springfield 4-2 on Tuesday. Cleveland will play at No. 2 Springfield on Thursday in the elimination bracket.

Sleepy Eye was led by Keeyan Netzke, who was 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Carson Uecker was 2 for 2 with a solo home run and two walks. Kayden Klein also was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two walks for Sleepy Eye, while Brayden Heiderscheidt was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs.

Klein got the pitching win in five innings, allowing three hits and two walks for no runs while striking out one.

LOYOLA 3, CATHEDRAL 2

MANKATO — No. 5 New Ulm Cathedral lost a close one to No. 4-seeded Mankato Loyola/Immanuel Lutheran on Tuesday in the second round of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament, falling 3-2.

The loss drops Cathedral into the elimination bracket, where it will host Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Loyola moves on to travel and take on No. 1 Madelia at 5 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.

Henry Forst led the Greyhounds at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored, while Elijah Rieser was 2 for 4 and Alex Portner was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Ryler Collins got the start on the mound and went three innings, allowing four hits and two walks for two earned runs. Josh Forstner pitched three innings in relief and took the loss, allowing two hits and two walks for one earned run.

RANDOLPH 12, SIBLEY EAST 2 (5 INNINGS)

RANDOLPH — No. 5-seeded Sibley East fell to No. 4-seeded Randolph 12-2 on Tuesday in the second round of the Section 2AA Baseball Tournament.

The loss drops Sibley East to the elimination bracket, where the Wolverines will host Waseca in a 5 p.m. game Thursday at Walsh Field in Gaylord.

Ashton McCue was 2 for 2 with an RBI to lead Sibley East, while Nathan Schauer was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Carson Schmidt took the pitching loss in one innings, allowing two hits and three walks for three earned runs.

USC 5, CATHEDRAL 2

NORTH MANKATO — United South Central defeated New Ulm Cathedral 5-2 in the elimination bracket of the Section 2A Softball Tournament on Tuesday.
