Wolverines stop Cyclones in 2AA playoff opener
GAYLORD — The fifth-seeded Sibley East Wolverines rolled to a 9-2 win over the 12th-seeded St. Clair Cyclones on Thursday in the opening round of the Section 2AA Baseball Tournament at Walsh Field.
Ashton McCue led the Wolverines at the plate in the win, going 3 for 3 with two runs scored, while catcher Henry Ott was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Alex Bachmann also was 1 for 2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for the Wolverines, while Riley Bussler added an RBI double. Nathan Schauer got the pitching win in six innings of work, allowing five hits and three walks for two runs, one earned, while striking out five.
Ryan VanBerkom led St. Clair at the plate, going 2 for 3. Jakob VanBerkom took the pitching loss in 5 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and no walks for nine runs, four earned, while striking out five.
Sibley East got all the run support they needed right away in the bottom of the fourth as they plated four runs.
An error allowed Carson Schmidt to reach to lead off in the inning, who stole second and was moved to third on a groundout by Bussler. Another groundout by Will Feterl scored Schmidt for a 1-0 lead. Schauer and McCue followed with two-out singles before Bachman’s double made it 2-0. Ott singled to center to bring home two more runs for a 4-0 Wolverines lead.
The Wolverines got another run in the second and three more in the third before St. Clair got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single from Paul Schmit to make it an 8-1 game. St. Clair added another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Jakob VanBerkhom, but the Wolverines scored the final run in the bottom of the fifth on Bussler’s RBI double.
Sibley East plays at No. 4 Randolph at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the second round. The winner moves on to the quarterfinals, while the loser falls to the elimination bracket.
