Knights down Warriors in playoff opener

SLEEPY EYE — Seventh-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s topped 10th-seeded BOLD 6-1 in the opening round of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament on Thursday.

Folkens earned the win for the Knights, striking out nine and allowing one run on one hit in a complete game. At the plate, Ethan Schwartz was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Tyler Mathioewtz was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Merrick Mathiowetz added a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

BOLD scored the opening run of the game in the top of the first, but St. Mary’s tied it up in the third as Braulick singled to bring home Schwartz. The Knights added two more runs in the fourth, with Merrick Mathiowetz tripling to bring home Tyler Mathiowetz before a sacrifice fly by Folkens made it a 3-1 game. St. Mary’s loaded up the bases in the sixth with no outs, then Mike Balko and Kyle Nelson drew walks and Schwartz collected an RBI on a fielder’s choice for a 6-1 lead.

St. Mary’s (12-9) plays at second-seeded Springfield on Tuesday.
