NEW ULM — Thursday afternoon in a Section 2A Baseball Tournament playoff game, New Ulm Cathedral ran by Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove — literally.

The Greyhounds were 10 for 10 on stolen bases and banged out 11 hits as they eliminated the Falcons 15-1 at Mueller Park.

The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Eli Anderson got the mound win for the Greyhounds, who improved to 15-6 on the season.

He went four innings and allowed one run on three hits while striking out seven.

Jackson Jenniges was saddled with the season-ending loss for the Falcons, who end at 7-13.

He went two innings and allowed seven runs on six hits.

Alex Portner and Josh Forstner each had two hits for Cathedral.

Portner, Anderson, Evan Blekestad and Evan Starke each had two RBIs.

Portner also added four stolen bases.

Cathedral now heads to Mankato on Tuesday to face fourth-seeded Loyola at 5 p.m.

RRC/WWG grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off of Anderson when Jake Erickson doubled and scored on a follow-up single from Colton Schaffran.

But the Greyhounds quickly erased that lead with a five-run bottom of the first using five hits and five stolen bases in an inning that saw Jenniges throw 34 pitches.

“We had that really good first inning,” Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas said. “We batted around and we had good at-bats. We were aggressive on the bases and made some good reads on where we could take an extra base here or there.”

Portner led off the inning with a single and promptly stole second and third.

Anderson coaxed a one-out walk before he stole second. Blekestad’s two-run single had the Greyhounds up 2-1.

Blekestad swiped second and scored on a Ryler Collins single for a 3-1 lead.

Josh Forstner followed with a single and a Starke two-run single made it 5-1.

“That settles nerves when you can put up a five spot in the first,” Woitas said. “And the stolen bases are a strength of ours — we have a lot of team speed and were able to capitalize when we got runners on base”

Cathedral added two more runs in the second on an error, two walks and two fielder’s choices.

The Greyhounds then plated six runs in the bottom of the third on four hits and four more stolen bases.

A Forstner lead-off double and two walks loaded the bases before a one-out single from Portner made it 9-1.

An error, the 10th stolen base and a groundout made it an 11-1 game.

Singles from Blekestad and Collins made it 13-1.

Meanwhile, Anderson was having his way with Falcons hitters as he allowed just two base runners in his stint after the first inning.

“Eli did a fantastic job for us,” Woitas said. “He has been really good on the mound for us in the last month. When he throws strikes and get ahead of hitters he is a tough guy to score runs on. He is a competitor.”

Woitas said that he was also happy with the Greyhounds bats that pounded out 11 hits.

“We had hits one through nine in the order and we did not have an easy out,” Woitas said.

The Greyhounds now face the Crusaders who defeated Cathedral 10-1 on May 1.

“They are a good team — their top half of the order is good — they battle — so it is going to be a really good game,” Woitas said.

Starting at $4.50/week.
