PREP BASEBALL
GFW 12, MCW 1 (5 INNINGS)
SHERBURNE — The Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Firebirds collected eight hits and capitalized on five Martin County West errors on Monday to roll to a 12-1 win over the Mavericks in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover baseball game.
Collin Hacker led GFW at the plate, going 2 for 4 with an RBI double and two runs scored, while Owen Swenson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Kaden Rieke was 1 for 1 with two walks and two RBIs also for the Firebirds, while Isaac Beckendorf was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Cayson Gosewich was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Rieke got the pitching win in 3 1/3 innings, allowing no hits and three walks for one run while striking out four.
GFW moved to 7-12 with the win.
MADELIA 5, MVL 4
SEARLES — Madelia came back to beat Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday in a nonconference baseball game.
The Chargers took a 4-3 lead in the fifth after RBI singles from Connor Bode and Kyan Kube, but Madelia responded in the sixth with an RBI single from Bradyn Grev tying it and an RBI groundout by Dalton Tatro giving the Blackhawks the lead for good.
Tate Becker led Madelia at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI. Zach Jacobs got the win in relief, pitching 2 1/3 innings and allowing two hits and one walk for no runs while striking out four.
MVL got three hits in the game, led by Bode, who was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Kube was also 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Aiden Weisensel was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Rogan Scriver took the loss on the mound in six innings of work, allowing six hits and a walk for five earned runs while striking out two.
Madelia improved to 21-2 on the year with the win, while MVL fell to 8-12.
SIBLEY EAST 7, CENTRAL 6
NORWOOD YOUNG AMERICA — The Sibley East Wolverines held off the Central Raiders 7-6 on Monday in a nonconference baseball game.
The Wolverines scored three runs to begin the seventh, but the Raiders got two back in the bottom of the inning to make it interesting after a two-run single by Mason Miller. Brody Stinson ultimately forced a popout after that, however, to earn the win. Stinson finished two innings of work allowing one hit and one walk for two runs, one earned. Aiden Bauer got the start and went five innings for the Wolverines, allowing five hits and two walks for four runs, three earned, while striking out five.
Riley Bussler led the Wolverines at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored, while Alex Bachmann was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Will Feterl and Landon Friedrichs each were 1 for 3 with an RBI apiece also for Sibley East.
Sibley East moved to 13-7 with the win.
SATURDAY
MVL 11, BEA 1 (5 INNINGS)
NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran ran by Blue Earth Area 11-1 on Saturday in a nonconference baseball game.
The game ended in the fifth inning due to the 10-run lead rule, which MVL enforced on an RBI single by Blake Sexton. Sexton was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Eli Schauland was 2 for 2 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored and Rogan Scriver was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Connor Bode was 2 for 4 with two runs scored also for the Chargers, while Noah Merseth was 1 for 2 with a double and three runs scored and Kyan Kube was 1 for 4 with two RBIs.
Bode also got the win on the mound in five innings, allowing three hits and two walks for one unearned run while striking out seven.
MVL moved to 8-11 with the win.
SLEEPY EYE 9, TRITON 8
SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye Indians defeated Triton 9-8 on Saturday in a nonconference baseball game that saw both teams rack up 13 hits apiece.
Karter Haala led Sleepy Eye at the plate, going 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Carson Uecker was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Kayden Klein was 2 for 5 with a double and three RBIs. Chase Zufall got the win on the mound in 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and one walk for two runs, one earned, while striking out one.
Sleepy Eye moved to 17-4 with the win.
