TEL roundup: Cubs take two by downing Longhorns, Cardinals

COURTLAND 13, STARK 2 (7 INNINGS)

COURTLAND — The Courtland Cubs opened their Tomahawk East League amateur baseball season on Sunday with a big 13-2 win over the Stark Longhorns.

The game ended in seven innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

The Drill brothers led the Cubs at the plate in the win, with Nolan Drill going 3 for 3 with an RBI and Jaden Drill going 3 for 4 with a double, a home run and five RBIs. Ansen Dulas got the pitching win in four innings of work, allowing six hits and no walks for two earned runs while striking out three. Teddy Giefer pitched three innings in relief, allowing two hits and three walks for no runs while striking out five.

Adam Sellner took the loss on the mound for Stark, going two innings and allowing three hits and one walk for four unearned runs while striking out two. At the plate for Stark, Arian Saenz was 2 for 2, while Talan Helget was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Nick Labat had a double and an RBI.

Courtland moved to 1-0 in the TEL after this win, while Stark moved to 0-1 in the TEL.

COURTLAND 13, FAIRFAX 3 (7 INNINGS)

COURTLAND — Courtland also ended things early in their second TEL game Sunday, defeating the Fairfax Cardinals 13-3.

The game ended in seven innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

The Cubs ended this game in the bottom of the seventh after a three-run homer by Jaden Drill.

Jaden Drill finished 2 for 3 with that homer and three RBIs and he also took two walks. Teddy Giefer was 2 for 3 with three RBIs also for the Cubs, while Chase Meyer was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Nolan Drill got the pitching win in five innings, allowing five hits and no walks for three unearned runs while striking out seven.

The Cardinals were led by Andrew Willemsen, who was 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Elway Berg was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Owen Swenson was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Tyler Fish took the mound loss, allowing six hits and three walks for six runs, two earned.

Courtland is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the TEL and plays at Johnson Park on Memorial Day against the New Ulm Brewers. The Cardinals, now 0-2 in the TEL, are at Gibbon for a 2 p.m. Memorial Day game.

LEAVENWORTH 2, SLEEPY EYE 1

LEAVENWORTH — The Leavenworth Orioles opened play in the TEL with a 2-1 win over the Sleepy Eye Indians on Sunday.

An umpire decision was made to shorten the game to five innings.

Tied at 1-all in the fifth, Jevan Richert singled in a run to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead. The game was called after the inning completed.

Richert ended up going 3 for 3 to lead the Orioles at the plate, while Dylan Hillesheim was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Mark Anderson pitched five innings in the win for the Orioles, allowing two hits and three walks for one earned run while striking out 10.

Sleepy Eye’s two hits came from Nick Mielke and Sam Tessmer, who each went 1 for 2. Tessmer’s hit was a double. Jon Peterman had the lone RBI of the game for Sleepy Eye. Marcus Martinez took the loss on the mound in four innings, allowing six hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out five.

Leavenworth, now 1-0 in the TEL, is at Springfield for another TEL game May 31. Sleepy Eye, now 0-1 in the TEL, hosts Springfield at 5 p.m. on Memorial Day.

HANSKA 14, ESSIG 7

HANSKA — The Hanska Lakers rolled to a 14-7 win over the Essig Bluejays in a TEL amateur baseball game Sunday.

Tanner Olson led the Hanska bats, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI, while Sam Knowles was 3 for 5 with a double and Sawyer Olson was 3 for 6 with three RBIs. Chris Knowles was 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs also for the Lakers, while Brady Mosenden was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Kevin Larson was 1 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two walks. Sam Knowles got the win on the mound in five innings, allowing five hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out three.

Josh Vander Plas took the mound loss for Essig in two innings, allowing five hits and three walks for six runs, five earned. Vander Plas also went 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBIs at the plate, while Winsten Nienhaus was 3 for 6, Joey Schugel was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Jay Helget was 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Hanska is now 1-0 in TEL play and plays the Milroy Yankees in Milroy on Friday night in non-league action. Essig, now 1-1 in the TEL, hosts Stark for a 1 p.m. TEL game on Memorial Day.

SPRINGFIELD 5, SEARLES 3

SEARLES — The Springfield Tigers topped the Searles Grizzlies 5-3 on Sunday in a TEL amateur baseball game.

The Grizzlies outhit the Tigers 9-3 but did all of their scoring in the first and second innings.

Jordan Milbrath was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead Springfield at the plate, while Madden Lendt was 1 for 4 with a solo home run and Tyler Hach was 1 for 4 with a double. Tyler Dick got the pitching win for the Tigers in three innings of work. He allowed four hits and no walks for no runs while striking out two.

Ethan Mixdorf took the pitching loss in two innings of relief for Searles, allowing one hit and three walks for three runs, two earned, while striking out three. Collin Helget went 2 for 4 with a double to lead Searles at the plate, while Kasey Kuck was 2 for 4, Kedar Schmitz was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Isaiah Rieser was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Springfield, now 1-0 in TEL play, is at Sleepy Eye for a Memorial Day TEL game. Searles, 0-1 in the TEL, hosts Hanska for a Memorial Day TEL game.
