PREP BASEBALL

CATHEDRAL 11, GFW 5

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral topped Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 11-5 in a Tomahawk Division baseball game that was suspended after three innings from April 9 and was completed on Tuesday.

Henry Forst earned the win for the Greyhounds, striking out two and allowing four runs on four hits in three innings. At the plate, Evan Bleckestad was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while Josh Forstner was 2 for 2 with two RBI. Elijah Rieser and Evan Starke each had two hits and an RBI.

Koufax Rose took the loss for GFW, striking out five and allowing 11 run on 12 hits in six innings. At the plate, Owen Swenson was 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Kaden Rieke was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Cathedral (12-6, 9-4), while GFW (6-12, 5-9) plays at Martin County West on Monday.

ST. MARY’S 16, MCW 4 (5 INNINGS)

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s rolled Martin County West 16-4 in five innings in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday.

Eli Christensen earned the win for St. Mary’s, striking out three and allowing four runs on four hits in four innings. At the plate, Tyler Mathiowetz was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Adam Braulik was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Merrick Mathiowetz and Landry Folkens each had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

St. Mary’s (10-9) plays at Mankato Loyola on Friday.

SPRINGFIELD 9, USC 6

WELLS — Springfield downed United South Central 9-6 in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday.

Brayden Trapp earned the win for Springfield, striking out two and allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. At the plate, Adiel Trevino was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Madden Lendt was 2 for 5 with two runs scored. Eli Streich had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.

Springfield (16-3) plays at Madelia for the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Baseball Championship on Thursday.

MADELIA 13, SLEEPY EYE 2 (6 INNINGS)

SLEEPY EYE — Tate Becker did it all for the Madelia Blackhawks on Tuesday, leading his team to a commanding 13-2 win over Sleepy Eye in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover baseball game.

The game ended in six innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

Becker was 4 for 5 with two RBIs to lead the Madelia bats. He also got the pitching win in five innings, allowing three hits and three walks for one earned run while striking out 11. Also for Madelia, Evan Coil was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs, while Zach Jacobs was 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs, Bryce Borkenhagen was 2 for 4 and Tony Zaleski was 1 for 2 with three walks and two RBIs.

Eric Lozano took the pitching loss for Sleepy Eye in 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, two earned, on five hits and five walks while striking out six. Jaxon Saenz was 1 for 2 with an RBI to lead Sleepy Eye at the plate, while Brayden Heiderscheidt was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Kayden Klein was 1 for 1.

Madelia (17-2) will host Springfield in the Tomahawk-Valley Conference title game at 7 p.m. Thursday in Searles, while Sleepy Eye (15-4) is at Yellow Medicine East for a doubleheader on Saturday.

NEW ULM 4, TCU 1

MONTGOMERY — New Ulm topped Tri-City United 4-1 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference baseball game.

Mitchell Hopp earned the pitching win, allowing four hits and three walks for one run in four innings while striking out five. Collin Forstner pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Eagles, striking out four while allowing one hit and two walks. Owen Castleman led the Eagles at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double, while Tanner Backer and Dirk Haynes each doubled in a run.

New Ulm (12-5) hosts Orono on Thursday at Johnson Park.

WEM 10, MVL 4

WATERVILLE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran fell to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 10-4 on Tuesday in a nonconference baseball game.

Kyan Kube was 1 for 2 with two RBIs to lead MVL at the plate, while Eli Schauland was 1 for 2 with a walk. Connor Bode took the mound loss, allowing seven hits and two walks for six earned runs while striking out three.

MVL (7-9) is at Le Sueur for a South Central Conference doubleheader on Thursday.

PREP SOFTBALL

MCW 10, SLEEPY EYE 0 (5 INNINGS)

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye was shut out by Martin County West on Tuesday 10-0 in five innings of a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover softball game.

Sleepy Eye had two hits off MCW pitcher Maddie Carlson, who struck out nine. The Sleepy Eye hits came from Jace Schauman and Lexi Hoffman. Taylor Berkner took the loss, allowing 10 runs, six earned, on 11 hits and four walks while striking out eight.

Sleepy Eye (14-6) prepares for the Section 2A playoffs, which begin next week at the high seed.

SPRINGFIELD 7, MLA/C 5

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield topped Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 7-5 on Tuesday in a nonconference softball game.

Regan Beadell got the pitching win in all seven innings, allowing seven hits and three walks for three earned runs while striking out seven. Beadell also had a double, while Makay Winkelmann was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Delayna Johnson was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Jada Reese was 2 for 3 and Abby Groebner was 1 for 2 with two RBIs.

Springfield (10-11) will now ready itself for the Section 2A playoffs, which begin next week at the high seed.

CLEVELAND 12, MADELIA 2 (5 INNINGS)

CLEVELAND — Cleveland defeated Madelia 12-2 in five innings in a Valley Division softball game on Tuesday

Addison Odegard took the loss for Madelia, striking out three and allowing 12 runs on six hits in four innings. At the plate, Emmy Johnson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Madelyn Lehman had a hit and an RBI.

Madelia (5-15, 3-8) plays at Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Friday.

LSH 19, MVL 4 (4 INNINGS, GAME 1)

LSH 16, MVL 0 (4 INNINGS, GAME 2)

NEW ULM — Le Sueuer-Henderson swept Minnesota Valley Lutheran 19-4 and 16-0 in a South Central Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday.

Nora Grace Otto took the loss in Game 1, allowing 19 runs on 17 hits. At the plate, Kenzie Graham and Avery Menk each had a hit and two RBIs.

Otto took the loss in Game 2, allowing 10 runs on eight hits in one inning. MVL was held hitless at the plate.

MVL (4-14, 2-8) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday.

GFW BOYS, SPRINGFIELD GIRLS WIN AT SPRINGFIELD MEET

SPRINGFIELD — The Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop boys golf team and the Springfield girls golf team won their sides of a prep golf meet on Tuesday.

The GFW boys scored a 182, followed by Springfield (187) and Cedar Mountain (197).

The Springfield girls scored a 190, followed by Cedar Mountain (216) and GFW (221).

For the boys, Springfield’s Colten Sell, and GFW’s Lincoln McCue and Cole Jacobson tied for first with a 44. They were followed by GFW’s Carson Lee (45), Springfield’s Braxton Brown and Erik Davis and Cedar Mountain’s Isaac Potter (47), Cedar Mountain’s Thomas Dahmes (48), and a four-way tie for ninth with Springfield’s Blake Zihlke and Dylan Simonson, GFW’s Brenden Lee and Cedar Mountain’s Logan Welch (49).

Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky was the medalist on the girls side (44), followed by Springfield’s Kynslee Kastner (47) and Mavri Winkelmann (48), Cedar Mountain’s Jaylyn Welter (48), Springfield’s Willow Krueger (51), Cedar Mountain’s Bailey Woodford and Claire Sherman (52), Springfield’s Annie Kuehn and GFW’s Grace Bunkers (53) and GFW’s Hadley Doehling (55).

SLEEPY EYE 6, LOYOLA 5 (10 INNINGS)

SLEEPY EYE — After giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th, Sleepy Eye got two back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run triple by Kayden Klein to win 6-5 win over Mankato Loyola on Monday night in a nonconference baseball game.

Klein was 4 for 5 with a double, a triple and three RBIs to lead the way for Sleepy Eye, while Karter Haala was 2 for 5 and Keeyan Netzke was 2 for 5. Carson Uecker got the win in three innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk for one unearned run while striking out two.

Sleepy Eye moved to 15-3 with the win.

WABASSO 12, BLHS 2 (GAME 1, 5 INNINGS)

WABASSO 13, BLHS 5 (GAME 2)

HECTOR — Wabasso swept Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Tomahawk Division baseball doubleheader on Monday, winning the opener 12-2 in five innings and the second game 13-5.

Joe Rohlik led Wabasso with three hits and three RBIs in Game 1, while Cason Olson added two hits, including a triple, and an RBI. Drew Kemp got the five-inning win, allowing one hit and two walks for two earned runs while striking out nine. Hunter Buboltz homered for BLHS in Game 1.

In Game 2 for Wabasso, Jayden Remiger had two doubles, a single and two RBIs, while Nate Riley had two singles and two RBIs. Brady Baune got the win in five innings of work, allowing four hits and no walks for three earned runs while striking out three. Cameron McColley led BLHS in Game 2 with three singles, while Ayden Buboltz added a single, a double and an RBI.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

NEW ULM BOYS TAKE 3RD AT TCU INVITE

MONTGOMERY — The New Ulm boys track and field team finished third out of five teams on Monday at a Tri-City United track and field invite.

Belle Plaine won the boys side of the meet, while St. Peter won the girls side. The New Ulm girls took fourth.

For the New Ulm boys, Hunter Heil took first in the 100 with a time of 11.43 seconds, while Jamison Portner took second (11.55) and Jace Lohman took fourth (12.01). The boys 4×200 relay team of Jackson Ocampo, Jamison Portner, Michael Hames and George Gag also took first (1:31.96), while Gag took first in the 400 (50.74). Hames took second in the 400 (51.42), while Jayden Broste took fifth (55.36). Gag also took first in the 200 (23.33) and fourth in the high jump (5-08), while Noah Mertz took fifth in the high jump (5-06), LenDale Dunmars took fourth in the long jump (17-11), Joey Wise took fifth in the long jump (17-11) and Josh Gordon finished third in the pole vault (11-0).

For the New Ulm girls, Jeslayn Skoglund took fourth in the 200 (28.84), while Brenley Nordby took fifth (29.04). In the shot put, Ellie Dake finished first with a top throw of 34 feet, 11 inches, and she also took fourth in the discus (100-0). Skoglund also took second in the high jump (4-10), while Sophie Berger took fourth in the pole vault (9-0).

The Eagles host the Big South Conference Championship Meet on Tuesday.

RIVER VALLEY SWEEPS HOME MEET

SLEEPY EYE — River Valley won both sides of a prep track and field meet on Monday.

For the boys, River Valley led with a score of 98, followed by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (54), Martin County West/Butterfield-Odin (25) and Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral (11). On the girls side, River Valley scored an 80, followed by GFW (64), MCW/BO (27) and MVL/NUC (22).

For the boys, River Valley’s Parker Kuehn won the 100-meter dash (11.35) and the 200m (23.25), while GFW’s Garret Stegeman won the 400m (56.20). River Valley’s Bryan Buerkler won the 800m (2:22.78), River Valley’s Dylan Dewitt won the 1,600m (4:55.99), and GFW’s Juan Sunun-Perez won the 3,200m (11:10.92). River Valley’s Cameron Moore won the 110m hurdles (19.90) and the 300m hurdles (44.22). The 4×100 relay was won by GFW’s Regie Mattes, Stegeman, Brayden Miller and Christopher Ruiz (46.55), the 4×200 relay was won by River Valley’s Stan Heiling, McCoy Marti, Matthew Fernandez and Kuehn (1:41.17), while the 4×400 relay was won by River Valley’s Dylan Dewitt, Alexander Bigelow, Austin Forster and Marti (4:05.46) and the 4×800 relay was won by River Valley’s Phineas Bislew, Robert Romberg, Oziel Lozano and Levi Hagen (9:33.96). Brandon Long won the shot put for GFW (39-9), while MVL/NUC’s Adrian Henry won discus (122-4). MVL/NUC’s Matthew DeDeyne won the high jump (5-4), Kuehn won the long jump (19-2.25) and Jony Flores won the triple jump for River Valley (37-.25).

On the girls side, River Valley’s Marley Hewitt won the 100m (12.93), while GFW’s Kinley Bruns won the 200m (27.35). Hewitt also won the 400m (1:00.85), while GFW’s Silvana Ruiz won the 800m (2:25.99). GFW’s Madyson Steele won the 1,600m (5:47.41) and the 3,200m (13:17.72). Katie Thram of River Valley won the 100m hurdles (16.05) and the 300m hurdles (48.07). The GFW 4×100 relay team of Kelby Bruns, Chloe Henrichs, Jennifer Guzman and Keyden Buboltz won (55.68), while the 4×200 relay was won by River Valley’s Yessenia Fernandez, Greta Siefkes, Camryn Maher and Frankki Plaetz (1:59.31). The 4×400 relay was won by River Valley’s Tessenia Fernandez, Thram, Lydia Dauer and Marley Hewitt (4:28.62), while River Valley’s Olivia Milbrath, Ali Almanza, McKenna Ibberson and Emma Hagen won the 4×800 (11:1879). GFW’s Annie Wersal won the shot put (31-3.5) and discus (116-4), while MVL/NUC’s Claire Beranek won the high jump (4-10). Dauer won the pole vault (8-0), and Buboltz won the triple jump (30-2.5).
