NEW ULM — The New Ulm softball team put up 16 runs on 13 hit, including a home run, with nine separate player recording at least one hit and three players earning multiple hits in a Big South Conference softball game against Marshall on Tuesday.

In just the first inning.

The Eagles finished the game with a 20-0 win in four innings as the team came up with its biggest margin of victory of the season on a day where winds surpassed 40 miles per hour in gusts.

Miley Flor earned the shutout win for New Ulm, striking out one and allowing four hits and two walks in four innings. At the plate, Gracie Baker was 3 for 3 for the Eagles with a triple, two doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored, while Lauren Schmiesing was 3 for 3 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Zoe Udhe was 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Flor had the home run with three RBIs and two runs scored. Madalynn Olson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Megan Brudelie was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

New Ulm started the game by putting six consecutive batters on base, with a Schmiesing two-RBI double starting off the scoring. Udhe added a two-RBI double of her own, and the batting order turned over with a Baker RBI triple. Schmiesing had her second two-RBI double of the inning soon after, and Flor’s three-RBI home run over the left field fence for a 15-0 lead. An RBI double by Baker rounded out the first-inning scoring as the Eagles started on their third time through the order.

Marshall held New Ulm scoreless in the second inning as it found some stability behind pitcher Jennifer Lee, but the Eagles got it going again in the third inning, starting with a double by Shelby Serbus that scored a run, then a two-RBI double by Baker. Brudelie added one final RBI for a 20-0 lead, and Flor and the Eagles defense wrapped up the game with a scoreless top of the fourth.

New Ulm played Tri-City United in a second game on the day, falling 12-10. Flor took the loss, striking out one and allowing seven runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Brudelie pitched 3 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing five runs on four hits. At the plate, Natalie Fischer was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Schmiesing was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Brudelie added two hits, and Baker had a hit and three runs scored.

New Ulm (11-6, 9-3) awaits playoff seeding for its next game.
