Area roundup: Evers collects 100th hit, homers in Sleepy Eye win

PREP SOFTBALL

SLEEPY EYE 12, SPRINGFIELD 2 (6 INNINGS)

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye sophomore Callie Evers picked up her 100th career hit on Monday as the Indians downed Springfield 12-2 in six innings of a Tomahawk Division softball game.

The game ended in six innings due to the 10-run lead rule.

Evers led Sleepy Eye at the plate also, going 4 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs, while Jace Schauman was 4 for 4 with a triple and an RBI and Taylor Berkner was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Jaelynn Schauman also was 2 for 5 with a two-run homer, while Kenley Jensen was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Berkner got the win in the circle, allowing three hits and two walks for two runs, which came in the first inning, while striking out six.

Jada Reese led Springfield at the plate, going 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored, while Makay Winkelmann was 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Regan Beadell took the pitching loss, going five innings and allowing 16 hits and a walk for nine earned runs while striking out eight.

Sleepy Eye (14-5) finished second in the Tomahawk behind New Ulm Cathedral with the win and hosts Martin County West at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a big Tomahawk-Valley crossover matchup. Springfield (9-11) hosts Mountain Lake Area at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

CATHEDRAL 8, NICOLLET 0

NEW ULM — Jayde Altermatt had a complete-game shutout as the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds topped Nicollet 8-0 on Monday at Harman Park.

She allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out 12 in the win. Altermatt also went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Greyhounds at the plate, while Thea Paszkiewicz added a double and three RBIs.

Zoie Rengstorf and Breah Henderson each had a single to lead the Nicollet bats. Brielle Osborne took the loss for Nicollet in six innings, allowing seven earned runs on six hits and nine walks while striking out one.

Cathedral moved to 18-3 with the win, while Nicollet dropped to 13-7.

NEW ULM 5, TCU 3

MONTGOMERY — New Ulm topped Tri-City United 5-3 on Monday in a Big South Conference softball game.

Natalie Fischer led the Eagles at the plate in the win, going 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Miley Flor got the win in the circle, allowing seven hits and two walks for two earned runs in all seven innings while striking out nine.

New Ulm, now 11-5, hosts Marshall in a Big South game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and rematches TCU after the Marshall game at approximately 6:30 p.m. at New Ulm High School.

ST. MARY’S 11, GHEC/T/ML 3

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s had a 10-run inning in the sixth to rally past Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 11-3 Monday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover softball game.

The Knights were led by Nell Weiss, who went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, while Taylor Mathiowetz was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Jaylynn Sellner had a hit and two RBIs. Mathiowetz got the pitching win, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out eight.

St. Mary’s moved to 8-10 with the win.

CLEVELAND 13, MADELIA 2 (6 INNINGS)

MADELIA — Madelia fell to Cleveland 13-2 on Monday in a Valley Division softball game.

The game ended in the sixth due to the 10-run lead rule.

Madelia was led by Makayla Sorenson, who was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, while Emmy Johnson was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Emily Jacobs took the pitching loss in six innings, allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits and a walk while striking out two.

Madelia (5-15) prepares for playoffs next.

ST. MARY’S 15, GHEC/T/ML 0

TRUMAN — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s ran by Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Monday for a 15-0 win in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover baseball game.

The Knights were led by Kyle Nelson, who was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, while Jack Windschitl had a double and three RBIs. Landy Folkens and Santiago Martinez also each had a hit and two RBIs for the Knights. Tyler Mathiowetz got the shutout, going six innings and allowing four hits and four walks while fanning seven.

The Knights (9-9) hosts Martin County West at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

MARSHALL 8, NEW ULM 1

MARSHALL — New Ulm fell to Marshall 8-1 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference baseball game.

Owen Castleman took the pitching loss in 2 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out one. He also led the Eagles in the plate, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Zach Hubbard added two hits.

New Ulm (11-5) is at Montgomery to take on Tri-City United on Tuesday.

SIBLEY EAST 5, GFW 4

GAYLORD — Sibley East edged Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 5-4 on Monday in a nonconference baseball game.

Riley Bussler led the Wolverines at the plate, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Ben Fredrichs earned the pitching win in two innings of work, allowing no hits, walks or runs while striking out two.

GFW was led by Luke Bastian, who was 2 for 4, while Kaden Rieke was 2 for 5 with an RBI, Koufax Rose was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Kellen Nachreiner tripled and drove in two runs.

GFW fell to 6-11 with the loss and hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday, while Sibley East moved to 12-4 an hosts Waseca on Tuesday.

WINDOM 12, SPRINGFIELD 7

WINDOM — Springfield fell to Windom Area 12-7 on Monday in nonconference baseball action.

Aiden Moriarty led the Tigers at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, while Brecken Heiling added a double and two RBIs. Moriarty took the loss on the mound in two innings, allowing two hits and five walks for five earned runs while striking out three.

Springfield (15-3) is at United South Central on Tuesday.

GIRLS GOLF

NEW ULM GIRLS TAKE 9TH AT BSC CHAMPIONSHIP

MORTON — The New Ulm girls golf team took ninth out of 14 teams at the Big South Conference Girls Golf Championship meet on Monday at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club.

Marshall won the event with a 377, followed by Fairmont (378) and Blue Earth Area (400). The girls co-medalists were Fairmont’s Katherine Zelaya and Marshall’s Dayton Webskowski.

New Ulm, which shot a 445, was led by Lilly Kral, who carded a 97 for ninth overall. Also for New Ulm, Maddy Wellmann shot a 114 for 42nd place, while Brogan Thordson and Lydia Osborne tied for 52nd with 117s and Chloe Kelley carded a 135 for 69th.
