SHERBURN — While the Sleepy Eye United girls golf team wasn’t quite ready to relinquish its control of the Tomahawk-Valley Conference after winning the three-leg tournament last year, it did have to share the title this season as SEU and Springfield tied for the conference championship.

SEU’s Sam Price was the individual conference champion, repeating for the fourth consecutive season. Price put up second-place and sixth-place finishes in the first two legs, but in the third leg Monday at Fox Lake Golf Club, where points are doubled, Price put up a score of 85 to place first.

“It definitely shows my resilience through golf,” Price said. “I started with not a super-great season, so it definitely shows how I’m able to push through and finish out with a good round for my last conference meet.”

Price said she had to work to put the start of the season behind her and finish strong in the final leg.

“I had to reset mentally,” she said. “It’s definitely a hard sport on the mental side. Kind of being able to overcome the harder rounds is definitely something that’s helped a lot. I also spent a lot of time working this weekend on a lot of things and kind of got it down.”

With the extra boost coming from being named conference champion, Price says she’s ready to take on the section tournament to try to return to state for the fifth consecutive season.

“It definitely is a big confidence booster for sure,” she said.

Springfield’s Mavri Winkelmann placed second in both the third leg of the tournament, shooting an 89, as well as the overall tournament, leading her team to a co-championship. Winkelmann said that winning a share of the conference tournament championship meant a lot to the team as a whole.

“It feels amazing,” she said. “We worked so hard this year, coming back from last year, it was such an improvement. We did so well and I’m very proud of our team.”

Winkelmann said her short game and mentality were some things that helped her to her second-place finish on Monday.

“Chipping was definitely one of my stronger suits,” She said. “Putting, kind of my short game in general. Driving helped a lot, but overall it was my mental game. The mental game is so important in this sport. Keeping your chin high, it’s important, and I had a good day with that.”

Rounding out the top finishers in the overall conference tournament were SEU’s Kiara Murphy, Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther’s Charlotte Berhow, Springfield’s Annie Kuehn, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart’s Ava Ahlbrecht, SEU’s Ella Pollard, Alden-Conger’s Kamri Reichl, Alden-Conger’s Bethany Yokiel, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop’s Anika Lee, Cedar Mountain’s Bailey Woodford, Alden-Conger’s Courtney Bakkedahl and St. James/Madelia’s Devyn Paris.
