Knights use two-out rallies to top Indians

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s scored in just two innings during the first game of a Tomahawk Division baseball doubleheader against Sleepy Eye, and never scored a run with fewer than two outs in the inning. But the Knights were able to use those two-out rallies to put up nine runs to come away with a 9-2 victory.
Sleepy Eye bounced back in the second game, winning 12-7.
Landry Folkens had a strong start on the bump in Game 1, striking out 11 and allowing just one run on five hits in a six-inning win. At the plate for the Knights, Mason Mathiowetz was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Folkens was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Michael Balko, Ethan Schwartz and Adam Braulick each had a hit and an RBI.
Chase Zufall took the loss for Sleepy Eye, striking out three and allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits in a complete game. At the plate, Jacob Fulmer was 2 for 2, while Jaxon Saenz was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Anden Braun added a hit and an RBI.
After a scoreless first inning, Mason Mathiowetz started the scoring with a two-RBI single that brought home Folkens and Kyle Nelson. Braulick made it a 3-0 game with a single to plate Mason Mathiowetz before a flyout finally ended the inning.

Saenz got a double with two outs in the bottom of the second for the Indians to try a two-out rally of their own, but Folkens coaxed a flyout to dash any hopes. After a scoreless third and fourth innings, St. Mary’s did it again in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Tyler Mathiowetz hit a double, Merrick Mathiowetz drew a walk and both came home as Folkens doubled. Schwartz came home on another double from Balko, then Nelson and Balko came home as Mason Mathiowetz hit a double for a 9-0 advantage.
Sleepy Eye put up a run in the bottom of the sixth as Saenz hit his second double and came home on a single by Keeyan Netzke, and then one more in the bottom of the seventh as Fulmer and Kayden Klein each doubled. But it wasn’t enough as a popup ended the game.
Klein earned the win in Game 2 for Sleepy Eye, striking out three and allowing seven runs, three earned, on nine hits in a complete game. At the plate, Carson Uecker was 2 for 5 with a triple, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Netzke had a hit and an RBI. Klein was 1 for 4 with four RBIs.
Tyler Mathiowetz took the loss for the Knights, striking out one and allowing four runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings. Eli Christensen made the start, striking out four and allowing six unearned runs on one hit and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. At the plate, Balko was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, while Braulick was 2 for 4.
Sleepy Eye (14-3, 11-3) hosts Mankato Loyola on Monday, while St. Mary’s (8-9, 8-6) plays at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Monday.
