Johnson Park video scoreboard coming soon

NEW ULM — The new video scoreboard at Johnson Park is close at hand — or maybe you should say glove.

Members of AIM Electronics, Daktronics, Hunt Electric (Paul’s Electric), the New Ulm Baseball Association and the City of New Ulm met on Thursday at Johnson Park to discuss the new video scoreboard.

Installation of the video board is scheduled for the week of May 18 with the projected first game on Monday, May 25 when the New Ulm Brewers host Courtland at 5 p.m. in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game.

John Grabow, co-owner of AIM Electronics, said that the new scoreboard brings fans a new excitement to watching the game.

“This scoreboard goes from the traditional balls, strikes and innings to being able to do have the capacities to do almost anything you can dream of,” Grabow said. “You can do a live camera feed — you could stream and do movies or live video. You can do live video of a player at-bat with his current batting average if stats are available with his picture again if provided. And you can do animation — anything is possible on this scoreboard.”

Grabow said that Johnson Park is only the third amateur park in Minnesota to have a video scoreboard.

“Hamel has one and Lakeville is putting one in this spring,” he said.

Grabow said that the new video scoreboard will give fans attending games at Johnson Park a great experience.

While Grabow said that, like anything new, there is a learning curve to it.

“But it is not hard to operate,” he said. “I tell people that when you are creating content, it takes time to do the prep work, but the operation is easy.”

NUBA President Bob Skillings said that having the new video board will be an exciting addition to Johnson Park.

“But never having operated a video scoreboard before, it will be challenging,” Skillings said. “But we have volunteers that are willing to learn and work at it — this will really enhance our games.”

Skillings also said that the scoreboard company has said that other organizations have tapped into the students from local high schools for a Video Production internships.

“And students are very technologically capable, so we probably will pursue that as well,” Skillings said. “And the game on May 25 would be a good game to introduce our scoreboard.”

The current Jess Roiger Memorial Scoreboard sign that is now on the Johnson Park scoreboard will be relocated to the scoreboard at Mueller Park.

Starting at $4.50/week.
