Hubin, Mathiowetz, Olson lead 2024 All-Journal Volleyball teams
First Team
Lily Hubin, Jr.,
S/OH, BLHS
The engine of the Mustangs’ offense, Lily Hubin has a motor that doesn’t quit and leads by example. Hubin recorded 300 kills, 477 set assists, 348 digs, 83 aces and 53 blocks, dominating in all aspects of the game. She surpassed 1,000 career set assists and 1,000 career digs this season and is 10 kills shy of 1,000 career kills. For her work this season, she was also named the 2024 Tomahawk-Valley Conference, Tomahawk Division Player of the Year.
Morgan Mathiowetz, So., OH, St. Mary’s
In her sophomore year, Mathiowetz recorded 293 kills to lead the team, along with 322 digs. Mathiowetz had 135 of her kills in conference play, most in the Tomahawk Division and was a unanimous All-Conference selection. For her career, Mathiowetz sits at 626 kills and 797 digs and will have a shot to break 1,000 in both categories.
Alivia Olson, Sr.,
OH, Wabasso
Olson was the focal point of the Rabbits offense this season, leading the team in kills with 329, 4.11 per game. She did this on an efficient clip, with a hitting percentage of .300. Olson also added 171 digs, 36 blocks and 33 aces, earning an All-Conference nod for the second time, this time unanimously. For her career, Olson finishes with 920 kills, 487 digs, 90 blocks and 87 aces.
Reagyn Kleinschmidt, Fr., MB/S,
Cedar Mountain
A two-year starter for the Cougars, Kleinschmidt was an All-Conference player this year as she became a six-rotation player her freshman season. Kleinschmidt controls the net when she is in the front row, recording 274 kills and 57 total blocks. In the back row, Kleinschmidt plays defense for one rotation — racking up 221 digs — and sets for the other two, putting up 289 assists, despite being new to the position. Her flexibility meant she put up big numbers in some games, getting double-doubles in four games and triple-doubles in five more. Kleinschimdt added 22 aces to round out her game.
Sam Price, Jr., OH, Sleepy Eye
A starter since her freshman year, Price took a big step up this season after putting in a ton of work during the offseason. Price played all the way around for Sleepy Eye and led them in kills with 311, fourth in the conference. Price also had 178 digs, 27 blocks and 29 aces and earned a unanimously-selected spot on the All-Conference team.
Shay Wilfahrt, Jr.,
OH/MB, Cathedral
A two-time All-Conference player her second year as a starter for the Greyhounds, Wilfahrt stepped up to lead the team in kills (349), digs (302) and blocks (38), placing in the top 10 in both kills and digs in a season in school history. Not only did Wilfahrt have the volume, but she also led the team in both hitting and defensive efficiency. Wilfahrt did this with consistency, match in and match out, leading the team in kills in all but two matches this season. For her career, Wilfahrt sits at 598 kills, 544 digs, 62 1/2 blocks and 38 aces.
Second Team
Ashlynn Sweet, Sr.,
OH, Madelia
Sweet was an all-around contributor for the Blackhawks this season. She had 262 kills, 147 digs and 58 total blocks, along with 35 aces. Sweet also holds school records for kills in a game (27), kills in a season (262) and kills in a career (659), finishing her career as the most prolific attacker in Madelia history.
Audrey Johnson, Jr.,
L, Wabasso
Johnson surpassed 1,000 career digs this season, totaling 310 in her junior campaign. A leader in the back row who demands maximum effort, Johnson added 37 aces and 39 assists, leading to All-Conference and All-State selections. In her career, Johnson has 1,264 digs, 118 aces and 153 assists.
Sara Carlson, Jr.,
S, Wabasso
Carlson racked up an impressive 811 set assists this season, over 10 a game, setting the table for the Wabasso offense that won 19 games this season and came second in the Tomahawk Division. Carlson added 31 aces and 24 blocks this season. For her career, Carlson has 1,461 assists, 88 aces and 33 blocks. Carlson earned an All-Conference nod this season.
Kelsey Ulrich, Jr.,
L, BLHS
The back-row leader for the Mustangs for the past two seasons, Ulrich surpassed 1,000 career digs this season with 322 on the year. BLHS head coach Aaron Hubin said Ulrich’s ability to read and anticipate as a libero was the best he’s seen in 22 years of coaching. Ulrich was voted as an All-Conference player this year.
Brianna Kettner, Sr.,
OH, Sibley East
Kettner was the focus of the Wolverine’s team this season, leading the squad in kills (245), digs (298), serve-receive efficiency, on-target passes (244) while having more aces (38) than missed serves (33). Kettner added 28 blocks and 27 set assists to round out her game. Kettner was an All-Conference player and was voted team MVP.
Jenna Bates, So.,
MH, MVL
One of MVL’s most impactful players this season, Bates played all six rotations and was one of the team’s strongest attackers and defenders. Bates racked up 232 kills to lead the team this season, along with 50 blocks, 179 digs and 20 aces. Just a sophomore, Bates was one of MVL’s most encouraging leaders on the court.
Third Team
Reese Hoffmann, Jr.,
OH, St. Mary’s
An All-Conference pick this season, Hoffmann was a key cog in a St. Mary’s team that made it to the Section 2A semifinals. Hoffmann totaled 236 kills, along with 211 digs. In conference play, Hoffmann was sixth in kills as the Knights finished third in the Tomahawk Division with a 23-6 record.
Kendra Erickson, So.,
S/OH, Cedar Mountain
A do-it-all player for the Cougars, Erickson sets for three rotations and hits for the other three, recording 226 set assists and 213 kills. Erickson added 237 digs, 14 total blocks and 33 aces, with three double-double matches and five triple-double matches. Erickson earned an All-Conference selection this season.
Jaylin Hartness, Sr.,
OH, Cathedral
A three-year starter and four-year letter winner, Hartness made her transition from defensive specialist to outside hitter smoothly this season. She led the team in ace serves with 50 while also being second in kills (194), digs (283) and hitting efficiency. Cathedral head coach Becky Wilfahrt said Hartness has very high volleyball IQ, which showed as she was able to collect kills despite being the shortest hitter on the floor at times. Hartness was selected to the All-Conference team this year, and for her career, Hartness finishes with 137 aces, an 89.1 serving percentage, 241 kills and 812 digs.
Josie Helget, Jr.,
S, St. Mary’s
Helget passed 1,000 career set assists this season, recording 552 assists as the conductor of the St. Mary’s offense. Helget was a unanimous All-Conference selection this year after being second in set assists in conference play with 237, along with 15 ace serves in conference, good for ninth. Helget now sits at 1,459 set assists for her career.
Chloe Schultz, Jr.,
MH, BLHS
An essential part of BLHS’s success this season, Schultz finished the season with a 92.6% serving percentage, recording 19 aces along with 217 kills and 49 blocks. Schultz was voted as an All-Conference player this season as she helped take the Mustangs to a section semifinals appearance.
Lauren Hubin, Fr.,
OH, BLHS
Lauren Hubin didn’t take long to establish herself as a top outside hitter for BLHS, finding her way as a six-rotation player in her freshman season. She recorded 194 kills and 322 digs this year, along with 61 ace serves and gave the Mustangs’ setters a chance to use all three hitters in their 6-2 offense.
