Greyhounds go 2-2 at SJA tourney

ST. JAMES — The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds volleyball team finished 2-2 at a St. James Area volleyball tournament on Saturday, defeating SJA and Norwood Young America and falling to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton and Le Sueur-Henderson.

Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 35 kills, 45 digs and seven blocks on the day, while Jaylin Hartness had 27 kills and 34 digs. Madelyn Haala added 34 set assists and 22 digs, while Abbey Hillesheim had 35 set assists.

Madelia finishes 2-2 in St. James

ST. JAMES — The Madelia Blackhawks volleyball team went 2-2 at a St. James Area volleyball tournament on Saturday, falling to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 25-15, 23-25, 15-11, defeating Edgerton 25-20, 23-14, falling to Le Sueur-Henderson 25-17, 25-12 and defeating Norwood Young America 25-13, 26-24.

Ashlynn Sweet led Madelia with 15 kills and four aces, while Makayla Sorenson had 10 kills and 25 digs, Katherine DeVlaeminck had nine kills and three blocks and Lauryn Grev had eight kills, four aces and 26 digs. Payton Bruns added 23 digs and six aces, while Alicia Lugo had 14 set assists, nine digs and seven aces and Katie Bocock had 13 assists, 12 digs and four aces.

Wabasso goes 1-4 at Class A Showcase

BURNSVILLE — The Wabasso volleyball team went 1-4 over the weekend at the Minnestoa High School Volleyball Class A Showcase Tournament.

Wabasso went 1-2 in pool play, falling to Mayer Lutheran (25-20, 25-15) and Kittson County Central (25-21, 25-19) and defeating Fillmore Central (25-14, 14-25, 15-12). In tournament play, Wabasso fell to Bethlehem Academy (25-16, 25-19) and Kenyon-Wanamingo (25-21, 25-14).

Alivia Olson led Wabasso with 25 kills, eight blocks and 18 digs in the tournament, while Camryn Irlbeck had 22 kills and 10 blocks and Leah Mathiowetz had 11 kills and five aces. Audrey Johnson added 36 digs and four aces for Wabasso, while Amelia Bootsma had 10 blocks and Sara Carlson had 79 set assists and 13 digs.

Mankato West 8,

New Ulm 2

MANKATO — Mankato West defeated New Ulm 8-2 on Saturday in a nonconference girls soccer game.

Olivia Enter had both of New Ulm’s goals, assisted by Kaelyn Eikanger and Jesalyn Skoglund. Chloe Sherrod had five saves for New Ulm before exiting with an injury, bringing Ellie Dake in, who had 13 saves before also exiting with an injury. Betsy Joyce finished in net for New Ulm and stopped two shots.

Late Friday

Lester Prairie 29, GFW 12

LESTER PRAIRIE — Lester Prairie defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 29-12 in a Mid Southeast District, West Subdistrict football game on Friday.

Owen Swenson led GFW with 24 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown, while Garrett Stegeman had 19 carries for 76 yards and a score. Dominic Krumwiede recovered a fumble on defense for the Thunderbirds.

GHEC/T 36, Madelia 14

MADELIA — Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman downed Madelia 36-14 Friday in a Nine-Man South District, West Subdistrict football game.

Chase Osborne completed 5 of 5 passes for 189 yards, a TD and two interceptions for Madelia, while Cale Odegard was 3 for 3 for 12 yards. Kyle Pietsch added eight carries for 10 yards and a score while catching a pass for 26 yards, while Noel Davilla had a 36-yard reception and Dalton Tatro added a 9-yard catch. Nick Firchau also had five catches.
