Defense Comes Up Big in Knights Second Win Over UM-Morris

MORRIS — Martin Luther College and Minnesota Morris met again on Thursday afternoon for the second time in as many weeks. The location may have changed this time around, but the outcome stayed the same as the Knights moved past the Cougars for another 1-0 win.

In last week’s game, the Knights needed a penalty kick goal by Katie Schoeneck in the 26th minute to help them beat Minnesota Morris. It only took three minutes longer for Schoeneck to find the back of the net in today’s game, as the sophomore nailed a 40-yard shot over the Cougars’ goalkeeper for the only goal on either side around the 29th minute of the first period. With that goal, Schoeneck added to her Upper Midwest Athletic Conference lead in goals scored (7).

Both schools had six shots on goal, with the Cougars gaining the advantage in total shots taken 22-18.

That wouldn’t matter though, as MLC’s defense came up with big stops to aid Maria Vik to her second shutout against Minnesota Morris. The Knights played without two of their normal defensive players, but the defense stepped up (literally and figuratively) in front of many shots. In the 76th minute, Rachel McCaughna played solid defense and kicked the ball off the goal line to preserve the shutout.

Vik recorded her third shutout of the season and made six saves along the way.

MLC (3-3-1, 1-0) picked up their first UMAC win with the result and will have almost a week off before they play Bethany on Tuesday, Sept. 24, on the road. The game will be at 4:30 p.m.

Starting at $4.38/week.
