MLC roundup: Knights volleyball has 0-2 start in Subway Stinger Classic

MLC drops 2 at Subway Stinger Classic

SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The Martin Luther College volleyball team played in their second nonconference tournament of the 2024 season on Friday, as they headed up to Superior, Wisconsin, for the Subway Stinger Classic.

On Friday evening, the Knights came up short in both of their matches, falling 3-1 to a pair of MIAC schools in St. Scholastica and Hamline University.

St. Scholastica 3, MLC 1

MLC dropped the first two sets with the Saints taking set one 25-18 and set two 25-20. The Knights managed to win the third set 25-19 after compiling 12 kills, while St. Scholastica had half of that total with six. However, the Saints closed it out with a convincing win in the fourth set 25-11 after having a team-hitting percentage of 0.4 on only two errors throughout the set.

Lindsey Baribeau led St. Scholastica in kills (12), aces (2), and blocks (4) and played a vital role in their win over MLC.

Grace Kieselhorst continued her solid offensive start to the season by leading the Knights in kills (15) and blocks (3), while finishing in second on the squad in assists (17) and digs (14).

Ella Walz paced the Knights in assists for the fifth consecutive match to start the season, picking up 19 in four sets. The sophomore also led MLC with three aces on the court.

Hamline 3, MLC 1

In the second match of the night, MLC bounced back from a first-set loss of 25-12 and evened things up 1-1 with a second-set victory of 25-21. In the set, the Knights were down 19-17 to the Pipers, before going on an 8-2 run to tie it up.

However, the Pipers would counter with 16 kills in the third and fourth set each to take the match 3-1. Lauren Wilborn led Hamline with 20 kills and two service aces.

Anna Kieselhorst had a team-high 22 digs, while Walz earned 13 assists and Grace Kieselhorst led MLC in kills with 11 in the match.

MLC (2-4) has a quick turnaround as it faces Mary Hardin-Baylor tomorrow at 10 a.m. followed by its final match of the tournament at 2 p.m., where they will play Marian University for the second time already this young season.

CROSS-COUNTRY

MLC men take 4th

in Waseca

WASECA -- The Martin Luther College men's cross-country team began their 2024 season Friday evening at the Finanger Invite hosted by Luther College. The Knights were one of four schools competing in the 5K race (3.11 miles), with the men finishing fourth (97 points). Luther finished in first as a team, scoring 21 points, while Gustavus Adolphus claimed second (45 points) and Hamline (3rd, 83 points).

Freshman runner Eliott Heiderich broke out onto the collegiate scene by coming in at 11th overall out of 76 participants in the event. The Luther Prep alum had a time of 16:56.1 and was the top MLC finisher. Senior Micah Schibbelhut earned 22nd overall after completing the race in 17:25.8, while another freshman in Daniel Ertman took 46th, clocking in at 18:23.4 and giving the Knights three top-50 finishers.

WOMEN'S

CROSS-COUNTRY

MLC women take 3rd

in Waseca

WASECA -- The Martin Luther College women's cross-country team ran in their first meet of the 2024 season at the Finanger Invite on Friday night. The women had a nice showing and finished third (92 points) in the team rankings against some tough competition including Gustavus (1st, 30 points) and Luther (2nd, 37 points).

Freshman runner Jemimah Habben had a strong start to her collegiate career and posted a time of 20:43.1 in the 5K race, which was good enough for sixth overall out of 71 runners from across six schools. Senior Katelyn Mensching secured another top-20 finish and had the second-fastest time for an MLC runner, coming in at 21:25.0 (16th overall).

Senior Hope Sulzle nabbed the 28th overall spot after a mark of 22:30.7. At the same time, Micaiah Wagner earned 38th from her performance of 23:17.7. In addition to those four MLC runners, the Knights also had another three individuals place inside the top 50, contributing to their third-place ranking as a team. Among those three were Maya Habben (42nd, 23:53.2), Liberty VanDenHeuvel (44th, 23:53.9), and Abbee Olsen (49th, 24:32.9).
