NEW ULM — Olivia Enter scored three goals which helped New Ulm shut out St. James/Windom/Madelia Wings United 7-0 in a Big South Conference girls soccer match on Friday.
The match could best be summed up with the fact that the Eagles had a total of 32 shots on goal, while the Wings managed only a total of four shots on goal (two in each half). Add in the Eagles’ ability to confine the action to the Wings area of the pitch the entire contest.
New Ulm had good ball handling, a solid defense and it was persistent in keeping the pressure on the SJ/W/M goal keeper. New Ulm goalie Ellie Dake was on her toes because she kept the Wings off the board with two good saves early in the first half. She had a total of four saves.
Kiyla Kolden got New Ulm on the board with its first goal at the fifth minute of the first half. The Eagles’ second goal came at the 13th minute on Jesalyn Skogland’s goal.
Enter got in on the action when she scored the next three Eagles goals. Her first one came at the 14th minute, the second at the 21st minute and the third came at the 32nd minute, with an assist by Kaelyn Eikanger. The Eagles led 5-0 at halftime.
Maggie Joyce scored at the 55th minute of the second half for the Eagles’ sixth goal. Stina Quist got the Eagles’ final goal at the 65th minute. Zoey Zins had the assist.
The Eagles had a total of 32 shots on goal. The bench players contributed to the night’s success because they played roughly one-half of the match, according to Eagles head coach Jonathon Johnson reported.
“The girls played way more relaxed tonight,” Johnson said. “They did really well.”
New Ulm (3-2, 0-1) will host New Prague at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
