Silver falls to Marshall in VFW Second District title game
MANKATO — Marshall defeated New Ulm VFW Silver 11-1 in six innings on Wednesday night in the VFW Second District Baseball Tournament title game at Mankato East High School.
After Silver topped Mankato East 8-3 in a 5 p.m. elimination bracket game Wednesday, Silver got a win by forfeit over Chaska to move on to the championship game. The title game was then played Wednesday night against Marshall, who won the winners’ bracket with a 14-13 win over Chaska earlier in the day.
The championship was played Wednesday night due to Chaska’s forfeit. Silver would have needed to beat Marshall Wednesday night and then again Thursday to advance to state, while Marshall needed just one win to earn a state berth.
In the 8-3 win over East, Silver was led by Jeffrey Kral, who was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs, while Evan Blekestad was 1 for 1 with two RBIs. Henry Forst got the start for Silver and pitched four innings, allowing six hits and a walk for one run while striking out two.
In the loss to Marshall, Silver was led by Alex Portner and Blekestad, who each had one of Silver’s two hits in the game. Blekestad had an RBI also. Mitchell Hopp took the loss in three innings, allowing three hits and a walk for one earned run.
