COURTLAND - The Courtland Cubs swept both games of a split double header on Sunday in Tomahawk East League play. In the earlier game Courtland defeated the Stark Longhorns by a score of 5-4, then in the later day they completed the sweep with a 9-3 victory over the Lamberton Long Sox.
Jackson Bode pitched the complete game victory against Stark. Bode gave up 11 hits, struck out four, walked one, and hit one batter.
Stark scored one run in the second and then added two more in the third on a single by Sean Mathiowetz, followed by a two-run home run by Zach Haala.
However, that 3-0 lead by the Longhorns was short lived as the Cubs clawed back by tying the score in the bottom half of the third inning. Teddy Giefer led off with a double off the right center field fence, Mason Cox was hit by a pitch, and Carter Lang got an RBI single for the first run. Jaden Drill followed with a double to plate two more runs.
Courtland took their first lead of the game in the fourth on a two-out home run by Giefer to go up 4-3. The Longhorns scored their final run in the seventh inning to tie the score again at 4-4. The Cubs answered in the bottom half with a double by Cox and a go-ahead RBI single by Chase Meyer. Bode allowed just one Stark runner to reach base in the final two innings. The Cubs second baseman, Teagan Kamm, had eight assists in the game, plus a put-out on a double play.
For Stark, Nick Labat went six innings, allowed three earned runs, six hits, struck out five, and walked one. David Surprenant and Dylan Klein pitched the final two innings. Labat and Brandon Helget each had two hits. Of Courtland's ten hits, Giefer had three, Cox with two, and Cade Bushard had two.
In the second game of the day for both the Courtland Cubs and the Lamberton Long Sox, Lamberton scored first with single runs in the first and third innings. But then in the fourth inning the Cubs took a 3-2 lead. After two walks, Nolan Drill hit an RBI double for the first run. Mason Cox followed with his own RBI single. With one out, Carter Lang put down a suicide squeeze bunt for the third run of the inning.
Courtland opened up its lead by scoring three more runs in the fifth inning, two in the sixth, and one more in the 8th. Lamberton scored its final in the ninth inning to make the score 9-3. Teddy Giefer picked up the win for the Cubs going seven innings. Teagan Kamm pitched the final two innings. They combined for eight strikeouts, four walks, and one hit batter, while giving up nine Lamberton hits.
Leading hitters for Lamberton were Eli Fast with two hits and Neil Eichten with three. Starting pitcher Luke Wilhite took the loss. Courtland ended with eight hits. Nolan Drill was 2 for 4, including two doubles, and Mason Cox was 2 for 3.
With the double wins, Courtland improved to 11-4 in the Tomahawk East League, tied with Springfield for third place. Lamberton is at 9-6 and Stark fell to 7-8. Courtland is scheduled to play at Springfield on Wednesday, July 17, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in a battle for third place in the TEL.
