Paa leads Championship Flight Round 1 at 64th New Ulm Invitational

NEW ULM — After the first round of the 64th New Ulm Invitational Saturday at the New Ulm Country Club, Scott Paa led the way in the Championship Flight by one stroke.

It’s the second year in a row Paa has led the field after Day 1, and he’ll be looking to close things out this time with a championship on Sunday after falling short to Lukas Stull last year.

Paa carded a 74 on Saturday to lead the way, while Andrew Metzen finished a shot behind with a 75. The returning six-time Invitational champion Johnny Larson shot a 76 along with Ethan Kraus to tie for third, while Aiden Guggisberg, Scott Stueber and Colin Huffman each shot a 78 to tie for fifth.

Also on Saturday in the Regular Division First Flight, Nate Voges led with a 7-over-par 78.

In the Regular Division Second Flight, Brodie Raymond led with a 78, while Tony Mielke led the way in the Third Flight with an 80.

In the Regular Division Fourth Net Flight, Kevin Bassett and Jerry Henning were tied for first after Day 1 with a 67.

In the Senior Division Championship Flight, Matt Pearson led the way Saturday with a 2-over-par 73. In the Senior Division First Flight, Jeremy Raths led with a 74, while the Senior Division Second Flight was led by Don Olson, who carded a 73.

Second-round action tees off at 7 a.m. Sunday morning. Paa, Metzen, Larson and Kraus tee off their next 18 at 8:10 a.m. on Hole 1.
