This year, 10 baseball players from high schools in New Ulm helped their teams in college seasons.
Here are some stats on them.
MASON COX (MINNESOTA VALLEY LUTHERAN) had another solid year for the MARTIN LUTHER COLLEGE KNIGHTS. He was named to two All-Region teams.
He was selected to the Second Team All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the Third Team All-Region by D3Baseball.
This season Cox hit .460 and had a slugging percentage of 1.292. In128 at-bats, Cox struck out just eight times. He had 10 doubles, six triples and five home runs while driving in 30 runs. He carried a slugging percentage of .758.
TEDDY GIEFER (MINNESOTA VALLEY LUTHERAN) earned All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors with the UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA-CROOKSTON.
Giefer went from splitting duties as a junior at first base to becoming one of the best players for Crookston. Giefer hit .366 with 36 runs scored, along with 14 doubles and seven home runs. He drove in 50 runs. He had a .566 slugging percentage and a 1.026 on-base percentage.
MARK SCHOMMER (NEW ULM CATHEDRAL) earned a spot on the 2024 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Central Region team for the UNIVERSITY OF MARY.
As a reliever, Schommer was nearly untouchable for the Marauders.
Schommer was also named to the NORTHERN SUN ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM.
He struck out 39 batters and allowed just 13 hits and seven walks in 26 innings. He finished this season with a 3-1 record and a 1.73 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP.
Of the five runs Schommer allowed this season, four came in the final game of the season when he pitched a career-high five innings of relief in an extra-inning game in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Tournament. He allowed a hit in just seven of his 13 mound appearances and a baserunner in eight.
CHRIS KNOWLES (NEW ULM CATHEDRAL) was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings D-III All-Region team.
Playing for GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS, Knowles led the Gusties at the plate with a .456 batting average. He was second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in RBI (51) and slugging percentage (.779). He was third in the conference in hits with 62 and home runs with 10. He also had an OPS of 1.301 and an on-base percentage of .522.
He led the Gusties with nine stolen bases and had 17 walks. His 106 total bases was second in the MIAC.
NOLAN DRILL (NEW ULM HIGH SCHOOL) led GRAND VIEW with a .338 batting average and a 1.083 OPS and a slugging percentage of .623.
Drill had 10 doubles and nine home runs and drove in 32 runs.
The NEW ULM HIGH SCHOOL trio of CARTER LANG, JADEN DRILL AND MADDOX MORTENSEN paced ALEXANDRIA TECH AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE this season.
DRILL hit .429 with 12 doubles, two home runs and 27 RBIs.
He had a slugging percentage of .611 and an on-base percentage of .529.
LANG hit .359 with six doubles and led the team in home runs with seven and RBIs with 40.
He carried a .621 slugging percentage and a .467 OBP.
MORTENSEN hit .277 and had 12 RBIs. He had a .414 and stole 10 bases.
HUNTER AND COLE RANWEILER (NEW ULM HIGH SCHOOL) helped the Minnesota State Mavericks this season.
Hunter hit .292 and had an OPS of .765 and a slugging percentage of .410. He had one triple and three home runs while driving in 40 runs.
COLE RANWEILER batted .333 and had a 1.079 OPS.
He had two doubles.
While not from a New Ulm school, SPRINGFIELD'S DECKER SCHEFFLER (BALL STATE UNIVERSITY) was a Journal area player that had a big season. He was honored by the Mid-American Athletic Conference on Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio, when he was one of 24 MAC Student-Athletes who received the Medal of Excellence in Cleveland, Ohio.
This season in the classroom, Scheffler carried a 3.980 GPA while hitting .325 for the Cardinals. He had seven home runs and 45 RBIs.
