PREP SOFTBALL
Springfield 6, Sleepy Eye 3
SPRINGFIELD -- No. 4 Springfield took down No. 5 Sleepy Eye 6-3 in the second round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament on Thursday.
Jalivia Richert got the win for the Tigers, striking out 13 while allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks. At the plate, Abby Groebner was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, while Brooklyn Sturm was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Richert was 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Taylor Berkner took the loss for the Indians, striking out seven while allowing five earned runs on six hits and seven walks in three innings. At the plate, Berkner was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Paige Haala had a hit and a run scored.
The tournament will continue on Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Sleepy Eye will take on No. 9 Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove at 10 a.m., while Springfield will play No. 1 New Ulm Cathedral at 10 a.m.
Wabasso 7, TMB 5
TYLER -- No. 3 Wabasso defeated No. 6 Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 7-5 in the opening round of the Section 3A Softball Tournament on Thursday.
Avery Carlson got the win for the Rabbits, striking out seven while allowing two earned runs on eight hits and two walks in seven innings. At the plate, Anna Struntz was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Cameron Irlbeck was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
RTR 2, Wabasso 1
TYLER -- No. 2 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton downed Wabasso 2-1 in the second round of the Section 3A Softball Tournament on Thursday, pushing Wabasso to the elimination bracket.
Avery Carlson took the loss for the Rabbits, striking out six while allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk in six innings. Addisyn Hillesheim had the lone hit for Wabasso, getting a home run.
Wabasso will play No. 5 BOLD at the Marshall Softball Complex on Saturday.
MCW 6, Madelia 3
WELLCOME -- No. 3 Martin County West defeated No. 11 Madelia 6-3 in the second round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament on Thursday.
Corban Tatro took the loss for the Blackhawks, striking out four while allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and four walks. Tatro led the team at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Makayla Sorenson was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Madelia will play No. 7 Cleveland Saturday at Caswell Park in North Mankato.
LCWM 5, TCU 1
LAKE CRYSTAL -- No. 1 Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial won its first Section 2AA Softball Tournament game against No. 8 TCU, coming away with a 5-1 victory.
Avery Voges threw a no-hitter in the game, striking out 12 while allowing no earned runs. Voges also led the offense with a 2 for 4 effort with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

PREP BASEBALL
Sleepy Eye 10, BLHS 0

SLEEPY EYE -- Marcus Martinez pitched five hitless innings and Isaac Lendt pitched a hitless sixth to lift No. 3-seeded Sleepy Eye to a 10-0 shutout of No. 13-seeded Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in the first round of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament on Thursday at Sleepy Eye Baseball Park.
Martinez walked three and struck out three in five shutout, hitless innings, while Lendt struck out one in the sixth without allowing a hit or walk. Austin Uecker led Sleepy Eye at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored, while Winsten Nienhaus doubled and drove in three runs. Gavin Strong homered for Sleepy Eye also and had three RBIs.
Alex Taylor took the loss for BLHS in three innings, allowing five hits and four walks for seven earned runs while striking out one.
Sleepy Eye (14-5) hosts Madelia on Tuesday in the next round of playoffs.
St. Mary's 11,
Cleveland 1 (5 innings)
SLEEPY EYE -- Sleepy Eye St. Mary's rolled Cleveland 11-1 in five innings in the opening round of the Section 2A Baseball Tournament on Thursday.
Mark Anderson got the win for the Knights, striking out nine while allowing one unearned run on four hits and one walk. At the plate, Jon Petermann was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Kessler Severson was 2 for 3 with two RBI sand a run scored. Kameron Kosak was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
St. Mary's hosts Granada-Huntly-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman on Saturday.
New Ulm 12, SJA 8
NEW ULM -- New Ulm defeated St. James Area 12-8 to close out the regular season in a Big South Conference baseball game on Thursday.
Kaden Larson got the win for the Eagles, striking out seven while allowing two earned runs on five hits and four walks in six innings pitched. At the plate, Ayden Jensen was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Tanner Backer was 2 for 4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Luke Suess was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Kyle Albrecht was 1 for 4 with an RBI and two run scored.
New Ulm (6-11) awaits playoff seeding for a game on Wednesday.

New Ulm 10, Jordan 6

JORDAN -- New Ulm scored five runs in the ninth inning to pull away with a 10-6 win over Jordan on Wednesday night in nine innings of a nonconference baseball game.
Kolton Achman got the win in relief for New Ulm in 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and four walks for two earned runs while striking out two. Tanner Backer started for New Ulm and struck out six while allowing four hits and five walks for two earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Zach Hubbard led New Ulm at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double an RBI, while Backer was 2 for 4. Landon Barstad doubled and drove in three runs for the Eagles, while Ethan Thompson homered and drove in three runs.
PREP GOLF
New Ulm sends 3 to second day of 3AA tourney
BUFFALO LAKE -- The New Ulm boys golf team finished sixth out of 15 teams on Day 1 of the Section 3AA Boys Golf Tournament at Oakdale Golf Club on Thursday, advancing three individuals to Day 2 as a result.
Marshall won Day 1 of the tourney with a 296, while New Ulm shot a 327 for sixth. Also advancing to Day 2 for teams were New London-Spicer (311), Minnewaska Area (318), Luverne (319) and Morris Area-Chokio (319).
Advancing for New Ulm to Day 2 next Wednesday at Oakdale were Will Fossen, Brayden Wendinger and Mason Buegler. Fossen shot a 79 to tie for 12th, while Wendinger turned in an 81 for 21st and Buegler shot an 82 to tie for 24th.
Gavin Epper turned in an 85 to tie for 39th and finish his senior season with the Eagles, while Brecken Neuman shot a 94 to tie for 67th with senior teammate Will Weidman.
The top five teams and next 14 individuals not on the top five teams advanced to Day 2.
Springfield boys, SEU girls win at North Links
MANKATO -- The Springfield boys and Sleepy Eye United girls won their sides of the meet in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet.
Springfield scored a 346 to lead the boys, followed by Cedar Mountain (349) and SEU (352). The SEU girls scored a 410, while the Springfield and Cedar Mountain girls were incomplete.
Springfield's Braiden Davis was the medalist on the boys side of the meet, scoring an 81. He was followed by SEU's Nolan Kucera and Springfield's Sam Rummel (83), SEU's Blaine Arneson (84) and Cedar Mountain's Ryan Kevelin (85).
SEU's Sam Price was the medalist for the girls with an 89, followed by Springfield's Mavri Winkelmann (100), SEU's Meriden Andres (103), SEU's Chloe Walter (109) and Kiara Murphy (109), and Springfield's Ava Lipetzky (111).
PREP TRACK AND FIELD
New Ulm girls take fifth at conference meet
FAIRMONT -- The New Ulm girls placed fifth out of six teams and the boys placed sixth at the Big South Conference Large School Championships on Thursday.
Marshall won the girls side of the meet with a 186, followed by St. Peter (148), Fairmont (136), Waseca (120), New Ulm (65) and Worthington (29). Marshall also won the boys side of the meet with a 151, followed by St. Peter (149), Fairmont (121), Worthington (106), Waseca (87) and New Ulm (76).
For the New Ulm Girls, Riley Wilson placed third in the 100 (13.26), while Kaelyn Eikanger placed fourth in the 400 (1:03.32). Megan Gauert placed fifth in the 800 (2:36.25), and Ellie Dake placed fourth in discus (94-3) and fifth in shot put (32-7). Jesalyn Skoglund placed third in high jump (4-9), while Sophia Berger placed second in triple jump (32-11).
James Osborne led the New Ulm boys, placing second in high jump (6-3). Brennan Shaver placed fifth in the 100 (11.44), while Easton Clark placed third in triple jump (39-7), fourth in the 400 (52.91) and fifth in long jump (19-5.75). The 4×400 relay team of Clark, Osborne, George Gag and Sullivan Gusso placed second (3:32.42), as did the 4×800 relay team of Dain Barie, Jakob Geiss, Michael Hames and Gusso (8:36.78). Cohen Carpenter placed fourth in shot put (43-2), and Ethan Lieb placed fifth in pole vault (10-11).
