Mavericks top Pioneers, win NCAA DII women’s basketball title

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Minnesota State Mavericks won its second NCAA DII Women’s Basketball National Championship Friday with an 89-73 win over Texas Woman’s University at St. Joseph Civic Center.

The Mavericks won the title game in 2009, the only other time the team made the Elite Eight.

The Mavericks were led by Natalie Bremer with 27 points, three rebounds and three steals, while Ava Stier had 13 points and eight rebounds. Emily Herzberg had 12 points, five assists and five steals, while Joey Batt had 10 points, six assists and seven steals.

The Pioneers were led by Ashley Ingram with 24 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists, while Jada Celsur had 20 points, five rebounds and four steals.

TWU scored the first points of the game but never led again after two buckets by the Mavericks. Minnesota State jumped out to a 26-13 lead in the first quarter and held a 46-32 lead at halftime.

The Pioneers cut a 25-point deficit early in the fourth quarter down to 10 with a little more than two minutes left, but the Mavericks did enough damage early on to hold on and celebrate the championship.

Batt and Bremer were named to the All-Tournament team, with Bremer being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

The Mavericks Men’s team will try to match the Women’s team as they face Nova Southeastern University in the NCAA DII Men’s Basketball Championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
