New Ulm goes 2-1 in home quadrangular

NEW ULM -- New Ulm Area honored their 1998-1999 state tournament team during a wrestling quadrangular on Tuesday with a pair of wins.
In honor of the 25th anniversary team, the wrestlers and team's coaches were presented after the first dual of the quadrangular that hosted Mankato West, St. Peter, and Jackson County Central. The 1998-1999 season ended with New Ulm going 2-1 at the state tournament and took a fifth-place finish in Class AAA. Pete Zangl made it farthest in the tournament for New Ulm, falling 3-1 in the championship round to Desmond Radunz of Henry Sibley at 112.
New Ulm went 2-1 in the quadrangular, defeating St. Peter 34-27 and Mankato West 62-9 but falling to JCC 38-27.
New Ulm took on St. Peter in the opening match of the quadrangular. The match started with a decision loss for New Ulm as Elijah Mercado defeated Regan Johnson at 107 pounds before New Ulm's Brayden Miller got a pin on St. Peter's Lexi Timmerman in 50 seconds at 114 to give New Ulm a 6-3 lead.
New Ulm's Kane Johnson matched up with St. Peter's Isaiah Hesse next at 121. Hesse opened up the match with a takedown before Kane Johnson got a reversal and a 2-point near fall to take the lead. In the second, Kane Johnson got an escape and a takedown to take a 7-2 lead before getting a pin at 3:46 for his 50th career win and a 12-3 New Ulm lead.
St. Peter's Brock Guth won by decision over New Ulm's Elijah Rieser at 127 to cut the lead to 12-6 for the Saints, followed by a decision by Charles Born over Tegan Kral in overtime at 133 to put the score at 12-9. A 4-2 decision by St. Peter's Ryan Moelter over New Ulm's Braxton Kiecker at 139 tied the score up at 12.
New Ulm's Winsten Nienhaus matched up against St. Peter's Deontre Torres at 145 for a pivotal match, with Nienhaus getting a takedown and Torres scoring an escape in the opening seconds of the match. Nienhaus got another takedown to end the first, but Torres countered with a reversal to open the second before an escape by Nienhaus gave him a 5-3 lead. Nienhaus scored one more takedown to close out the second and an escape to open the third, adding one more takedown for a 12-4 major decision to give New Ulm a 16-12 lead.
Evan Walter got a decision for St. Peter over New Ulm's Lane Ruch at 152, and St. Peter's Nakiye Mercado earned a fall over New Ulm's Noah Engle at 160 in 2:47 to give St. Peter a 21-16 lead. New Ulm's Jamisen Frederickson got a pin in 1:01 over St. Peter's Max Burger at 172, but St. Peter's Addison Hanson pinned New Ulm's Wyatt Pollard at 189 to maintain a 27-22 lead.
Needing a win to keep New Ulm in the match, Ethan Lieb faced off against St. Peter's Oscar Martinez at 215. After a scoreless first, Lieb only needed one takedown to get a pin on Martinez, winning by fall in 2:35 and bringing the Eagles within 1 point for the final match. Evan Thompson brought it home for New Ulm at 285, getting a pin in 16 seconds over St. Peter's Haadi Ahmed for a 34-27 win.
Rieser ended up picking up his 75th career win later in the night with a 12-3 major decision over Mankato West's Robert Wicks.
