Vikings strike early and often, down Knights 5-1

MANKATO — Martin Luther College fell 5-1 to Bethany Lutheran College Wednesday in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer game at Bethany Lutheran College.

BLC had 21 shots to MLC’s 13. MLC’s Rebekah Schroeder had six saves, while BLC had seven saves as a team. Lydia Krenke led the Knights with three shots on goal.

The game started with an early header goal by BLC in the fourth minute by Olatiz Muguruza, assisted by Elena Lujan Rubio. Lujan Rubio followed that up with her own goal, assisted by Googie Mueller in the seventh minute. Riley Ping scored the Vikings’ third goal assisted by Mia Johnson in the 23rd minute, and Johnson got her second assist on a goal by Bella Garza in the 34th minute to make it a 4-0 game.

Lilianne Zimpelmann put the ball in the back of the net at the end of the half, but time expired just before the shot was made, keeping it 4-0 at half.

Muguruza continued the scoring in the second half with her second goal, assisted by Lujan Rubio.

MLC got a consolation goal by Naomi Foley that was assisted by Madeline Bourman in the 74th minute for a final score of 5-1.

MLC (3-8-2) travels to Crown College on Saturday.
