NEW ULM — Northland College came away with a 2-0 shutout victory over Martin Luther College in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference men’s soccer game Saturday.

Nathan Pausma had the first scoring chance, but hit attack was cleared by the Northland defense. Northland scored its first goal with 31:46 to go in the first half when Victor Vancauteren sent the ball into the back of the net. Zachary Pausma followed this up with three nice saves on the next three Northland attacks. Nathan Pausman had another chance on the other end of the pitch, but his shot in the upper-right corner of the net was blocked with an athletic dive by Northland keeper Jamie Colvill with 18 minutes to play in the half. MLC had another chance to score late in the half with a free kick just outside the box, but Jake Vilhauer’s shot was saved by Colvill.

MLC’s Johannes Bourman had another chance to score early in the second half, with a pass inside the box, but his shot sailed wide left. Nathan Pausma had another free kick saved by Colvill with another great save by Colvill.

With 28 minutes to go in the game, Northland earned a penalty kick with a foul in the box, but the shot was saved by a diving Zachary Pausma to keep the score at 1-0. However, Northland’s next shot hit the back of the net, giving them a 2-0 lead which they held onto for the rest of the game.

MLC (3-10, 1-7) travels to play Bethany Lutheran College on Wednesday.
