GRANADA -- Sleepy Eye started its volleyball season off with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-9 sweep over Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman in a nonconference match Thursday.
Kadence Hesse led the Indians with 13 kills, six digs, two blocks and two aces, while Brea Mertz had eight kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Sam Price added eight kills for Sleepy Eye, while Lydia Helget had 18 set assists and four aces.
Sleepy Eye (1-0) is at Mankato Loyola on Monday.
Wabasso 3, YME 0
GRANITE FALLS -- Wabasso swept Yellow Medicine East 25-18, 25-20, 25-14 on Thursday in a nonconference volleyball match.
Avery Carlson led the Rabbits in the win with seven kills, nine digs, three aces and two block assists, while Camryn Irlbeck added seven kills and Lyla Kittelson had five kills, three aces, three block assists and two solo blocks. Sara Carlson also had 27 set assists, four ace serves and six digs for Wabasso, while Natasha Doubler had seven digs and Audrey Johnson had three aces.
Wabasso (1-0) hosts Lakeview on Tuesday.
St. Mary's 3, MLA 1
COMFREY -- Sleepy Eye St. Mary's came back to top Mountain Lake Area 20-25, 25-12, 25-14, 25-13 on Thursday in four sets of nonconference volleyball action.
The Knights (1-0) were led by Josie Helget's 40 set assists and five ace serves and Jenica Schroepfer's 13 kills. Reese Hoffman added 10 kills for the Knights, while Natalie Fischer had six ace serves and Addie Hoffmann had 11 digs.
The Knights travel to Granada for a nonconference match Tuesday night.
Cleveland 3, Cathedral 0
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland held off New Ulm Cathedral for a 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 sweep on Thursday night in a nonconference volleyball season opener.
Cathedral (0-1) was led by Jenna Hotovec's eight kills and 18 digs, while Shay Wilfahrt had four kills, 12 digs and two ace serves. Madelyn Haala added 19 set assists for the Greyhounds also.
The Greyhounds host Madelia at 7 p.m. Friday.
GIRLS SOCCER
New Ulm 0, New Prague 0
NEW PRAGUE -- New Ulm opened its season by battling New Prague to a scoreless tie on Thursday in a nonconference girls soccer game.
New Ulm had eight shots on goal in the tie.
New Ulm goalies Ariana Dreyer and Ellie Dake had seven and four saves, respectively.
New Ulm is at St. Peter for a 10 a.m. game Saturday.
