Sleepy Eye VFW bats go cold as Marshall moves on in Second District winner’s bracket

MANKATO -- Sleepy Eye VFW's bats went cold in the latter innings of a Second District VFW Baseball Tournament game against Marshall, losing 11-2 Thursday at Wolverton Field.
Kayden Klein took the loss for Sleepy Eye, giving up four earned runs on seven hits in four innings pitched. At the plate for Sleepy Eye, Kessler Severson was 1 for 3 with a run scored, while Cole Eckstein had a double.
Marshall opened the scoring in the first, bringing one across the plate, but Sleepy Eye responded with two runs in the second, with Tyler Mathiowetz stealing home and Severson scoring on an error after stealing third.
Marshall retook the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs, and never gave up the lead again. Marshall scored once in the third, twice in the fifth, and three times in the sixth to seal the game.
Sleepy Eye didn't get a runner past third in the final three innings of the game, with Gavin Strong picking up their only hit in that time.
Sleepy Eye drops to the elimination bracket after the loss and will play Mankato American VFW at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Wolverton Field.
Marshall plays Mankato East VFW at noon Friday.
