Pearson sets record for NUHS at Big South meet
MARSHALL — Emily Pearson set another school record in the pole vault on Tuesday at the Big South Conference Track and Field Meet at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Her top jump of 11 feet, 9 inches Tuesday broke her record she set last week of 11-3. She also held the previous record of 11-1, which she set last year.
The New Ulm girls track and field team finished fifth at the event with 66 points.
The Marshall girls won the meet with 182.5 points.
The New Ulm boys took sixth at the meet with 54 points, while Worthington won the meet with 166.5 points.
Laura Bertrang also led the New Ulm girls, finishing first in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet, as well as finishing third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.43. Kaelyn Eikanger finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.05, while the New Ulm 4×100 relay team of Bertrang, Pearson, Bryn Nesvold and Estelle Fischer finished second (53.31). Ella Freiderich finished fifth in the pole vault with a vault of 9 feet, while Keira Holberg finished third in the triple jump (32-2.25).
Leading the New Ulm boys was James Osborne, who took second in the boys high jump with a top jump of 6 feet. His teammate Ethan Lieb finished fourth in the high jump (5-10). New Ulm’s Marqavion Haefner finished second in the boys pole vault with a top jump of 12 feet, 6 inches, while his teammates Easton Clark and Collin Horning took third and sixth, respectively, in the long jump (20-0.25; 19-0). Clark also took fourth in the triple jump (41-4.75).

Wabasso 15, Lakeview 0 (4 innings)
Wabasso 7, RTR 6
WABASSO — No. 2-seeded Wabasso went 2-0 in the Section 3A Softball Tournament on Tuesday, beating No. 7-seeded Lakeview 15-0 in four innings and No. 3 Russel-Tyler-Ruthton 7-6.
Avery Carlson picked up the win in the first game, getting five strikeouts and allowing two hits in three innings. Sophia Hanna was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Kelsey Frank was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Annabelle Struntz earned the win in the second game for Wabasso, getting three strikeouts while allowing two hits and one earned run in 2 1/3 innings. Carlson started in the circle, getting four strikeouts while allowing seven hits and four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
At the plate for the Rabbits, Frank was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored, while Lyla Kittleson was 2 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Hanna was 1 for 4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI.
Wabasso plays No. 1 Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg on Saturday at the Marshall Softball Complex at 11 a.m.
MCW 13, Madelia 3 (6 innings)
WELCOME — No. 7-seeded Martin County West downed No. 10-seeded Madelia 13-3 in six innings in the first round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament on Tuesday.
Corban Tatro took the loss for Madelia, getting seven strikeouts while allowing 14 hits and nine earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Abby Jacobs had the team’s only hit, while also drawing a walk and scoring two runs. Tatro and Ashlynn Sweet each had an RBI.
Madelia ends their season with a 4-16 record.
MLA/C 14, GFW 1 (5 innings)
MOUNTAIN LAKE — No. 3-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey took down No. 14-seeded Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 14-1 in five innings in the first round of the Section 2A Softball Tournament on Tuesday.
Halle Bleick took the loss for GFW, getting six strikeouts and allowing 11 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Taylor Schafer had the Thunderbirds’ lone score with a solo home run in the second inning.
GFW finishes its season with a 1-19 record.
LCWM 12, St. Clair/Loyola 0 (5 innings)
LAKE CRYSTAL — No. 5 Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial rolled past No 12 St. Clair/Loyola 12-0 in five innings in the first round of the Section 2AA Softball Tournament.
Avery Voges got the win in the circle for the Knights, getting seven strikeouts and allowing no hits in four innings pitched. Voges, Nettie Parsons, Addie Ahern and Rilee Penkert each got a hit in the game.
LCWM travels to No. 4 Le Sueur-Henderson on Thursday.
PREP BASEBALL
Wabasso 10, KW 1
ST. PETER — Wabasso defeated Kenyon-Wanamingo 10-1 in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday.
Adryen Tietz earned the win on the mound for the Rabbits, getting eight strikeouts while allowing five hits and one earned run in five innings. Tietz also had a home run and a double with four total hits and two RBIs with three runs scored, while Jaxson Wagner had two doubles and three RBIs for Wabasso. Calvin Hanna had two hits and two RBIs with three runs scored.

Mankato East 7, New Ulm 4
MANKATO — Mankato East defeated New Ulm 7-4 on Monday in a nonconference softball game.
Ramsey Hopp pitched all seven innings and struck out three, allowing seven hits and three walks. Lauren Schmiesing was 2 for 3 with a run scored, a double and a stolen base. Brya Aschenbrenner was 2 for 3 with an RBI also for the Eagles.
New Ulm hosts Tri-City United on Thursday in Section 2AA playoff action.
PREP BASEBALL
Sleepy Eye 9, St. Clair 2
ST. CLAIR — Sleepy Eye downed St. Clair 9-2 on Monday in a nonconference baseball game.
Kayden Klein was 2 for 2 with an RBI to lead Sleepy Eye at the plate, while Cody Schultz was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored and Jacob Price was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Marcus Martinez got the win in three innings of work, giving up one hit and no walks for no runs while fanning three.
The Indians host a Section 2A playoff game on Tuesday.
