Searles opens TEL season with win over Essig

SEARLES -- The Searles Grizzlies took down the Essig Bluejays 10-3 Wednesday night in a Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game in the 2023 season opener.

Matt Rieger picked up the win on the mound for Searles, getting seven strikeouts and allowing eight hits and two earned runs in six innings pitched. Nick Dewanz got the save with eight strikeouts and one hit allowed in three innings.

On offense for the Grizzlies, Noah Wilmes was 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Collin Helget was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Isaiah Rieser also was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Eric Scheibel took the loss on the mound for the Bluejays, getting one strikeout and allowing three hits and two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings pitched. At the plate for Essig, Mason Sellner was 2 for 5 with a run scored, while Kaiden Hammerschmidt was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

Searles travels to Hanska on Sunday. Essig hosts Courtland on Sunday.
