Hopp rolls late, New Ulm rallies past Delano

NEW ULM -- Despite falling behind 3-0 after 2 1/2 innings, New Ulm rallied to a 4-3 win over Delano in a nonconference softball game Friday at New Ulm High School.
Ramsey Hopp got the win in the circle, getting five strikouts while allowing two hits, one walk and three earned runs, all of which came in the first three innings. Hopp had a perfect game from the fourth inning on while the offense piled on four runs.
"I think the energy just got better," Hopp said. "We just kept working on it as a team, getting runners on, and eventually it went our way."
Hopp was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double. Gracie Linbo had an RBI amd a run scored, while Brooklyn Lewis had a hit, a stolen base and a run scored. Maddie Backer had two hits, two stolen bases and two RBIs.
Delano opened up the game with a 1-0 lead in the first inning while allowing a single to Hopp in the bottom of the first. Neither team had a hit in the second, with shortstop Brooklyn Lewis saving a line-drive hit with a nice snag in midair. Delano then came back in the third and scored two more runs, increasing its lead to 3-0.
The Eagles scored their first run in the bottom of the third, with Berkley Wilfahrt scoring on an error. New Ulm steadily chipped away at Delano's lead for the remaining innings, with Hopp retiring batter after batter from the circle. First, Maddie Backer singled through the gap at second, bringing home pinch-runner Lauren Schmiesing after Hopp doubled to lead off the fourth inning.
Then, in the sixth, Gracie Linbo singled to bring home Lewis. With the game tied, Backer singled once more to bring Linbo home for the go-ahead run. Up 4-3, Hopp retired her 13th straight batter faced to get the win for the Eagles.
Hopp complimented her defense for helping her hold on for the victory.
"They're [Delano] going to put the ball into play, and our defense made good plays," Hopp said. "That's always good."
New Ulm will host Marshall on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
