NEW ULM -- In the past month, two area high school conferences have seen changes that will affect the future of those two conferences.
And there could be more conference changes for the 2024-25 school year and beyond.
You may want to call it the "Domino Affect."
It started with Tri-City United electing to leave the seven team Minnesota River Conference and join the now 14-team Big South Conference.
On Tuesday, Minnesota Valley Lutheran announced that they will be leaving the Tomahawk Conference and join a new conference made up of all Class 2A schools in the 2024-25 season.
The Tomahawk Conference had consisted of all Class 1A schools with the exception of MVL.
And the departure of MVL after next season opens a space in the future eight-team league.
With MVL leaving, doors are open for other schools who could potentially request for admission to the Tomahawk Conference if the conference elects to open.
Could Lester Prairie and Mayer Lutheran -- currently members of the Minnesota River Conference (that will dissolve after next year) -- ask for admission?
Would a school like BOLD chose to leave the West Central Conference or even Murray County Central jump the Red Rock Conference?
And there is another potential scenario.
With the departure of Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial and St. Clair from the Valley Conference to the new conference, does it open a door for a potential merger between the Valley Conference and the Tomahawk Conference in the future?
Right now, with the exception of TCU and MVL finding new conference homes in the near future, the rest is just speculation about the future of some conferences.
But there is talk of some potential movement of schools that may get more interesting this summer.
