NEW ULM -- In a doubleheader Tuesday between Crown College and Martin Luther College at MLC, a late push by Crown led the Polars past the Knights 8-6 in the first matchup.
Crown completed the sweep with a 10-3 victory in the second game.
Jessica Horn pitched the first game for the Knights, finishing with three strikeouts and eight runs allowed in 6 2/3 innings.
The game started with an early Crown lead as Ashley Earick batted in three runs with a double in the first inning. However, MLC battled back, with Jordyn Heckendorf getting home on a passed ball in the first and Emmalee Mindock scoring on a double by Katelyn Rassat.
The Knights had a big third inning, with Heckendorf scoring on another passed ball, Anna Busch hitting a two-RBI single and Lisa Hoffer scoring on an error to go up 6-3.
Horn and the Knights would hold the Polars scoreless until the seventh inning, when, with two outs, Crown's Morgan Aylsworth, a 2022 Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop grad, hit an RBI double to spark a five-run inning, putting them up 8-6. Madison Uhlenbrauck was called on to pitch the final out for the Knights, but MLC failed to score a run in the bottom of the seventh, falling to Crown in the first matchup.
The second game between the two teams was much more decisive, as Crown took an early 3-0 lead on a two-RBI single by Maliya Martinez and never looked back. The Polars scored five runs on six hits in the second inning, while Busch stole home for the Knights' lone score in the second inning.
MLC tacked on another two runs by Horn and Britney Prahl in the third, but not before Crown tacked on another run with an RBI single by Itzel Valles. Crown scored one more run in the seventh with a single by Abbey Underdahl to finish the game up 10-3.
MLC (3-13) will travel to take on North Central College on Friday.
