NEW ULM — The last time that the New Ulm Eagles girls played Marshall in hockey, it was close 2-1 win for the Eagles.

Thursday night, it got even closer.

New Ulm and Marshall battled for 59 minutes and could not determine a winner as the teams battled to a scoreless tie in overtime.

New Um’s Ava Brennan stopped all 23 Tigers shots in the game while the Tigers Bella Duetz halted all 28 New Ulm shots.

“Both teams played hard — both teams hit a pipe in the overtime,” New Ulm coach Jeremy Reed said. “So you cannot ask for much more than to go out and work. Even if we did not have our best night I thought that we really started playing hockey like we had been over Christmas break.”

And it was a game in which the teams mirrored each other.

Both teams had four shots on goal in the first period and each had nine shots on goal in the second period.

Marshall was 0 for 4 on power plays in the game while the Eagles were 0 for 2.

“There was not a lot of offense,” Reed said. “Both teams are pretty structurally sound defensively. Overall it was a pretty mistake-free game and entertaining at both ends of the rink.”

New Ulm (7-6-1, 4-1-1) is at Waseca Friday before hosting Minnesota River at 2 p.m. Saturday as part of Hockey Day New Ulm at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Starting at $4.50/week.
