MVL 83, Springfield 73
NEW ULM -- Minnesota Valley Lutheran's double-digit cushion in the first half was enough to hold off Springfield 83-73 Saturday afternoon in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game.
The Chargers were led by Ben Pearson's 24 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists, while Malachi Kohls had 14 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks and Ben Halverson had 11 points.
The Tigers were led by Brayden Sturm's 22 points, five rebounds and three steals, while MaCoy Krick had 15 points and Ben Potter had 14 points.
MVL (2-1, 2-0) is at Bethany Lutheran College next for a 6:30 p.m. holiday tournament game with Maple River on Dec. 27, while Springfield (0-1, 0-1) travels to take on Red Rock Central in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game Monday.
GFW 65, Mayer Lutheran 58
MAYER -- Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop held on for a 65-58 win over Mayer Lutheran on Saturday afternoon in a nonconference boys basketball game.
GFW was led by Cole Jacobson and Dominic Rose's 14 points each, while Braylan Freitag added 10 points.
GFW (3-2) travels to take on Wabasso in a 7 p.m. Tomahawk Conference game on Monday.
Wabasso 79, Sleepy Eye 58
WABASSO -- Wabasso downed Sleepy Eye 79-58 on Saturday night in a Tomahawk Conference boys basketball game.
Sleepy Eye was led by Eric Lozano's 13 points, while Landon Wendinger had 11 points, five rebounds and three steals, Isaac Lendt had 11 points and five steals and Brayden Heiderscheidt had 11 points and three assists.
Wabasso was led by Karson Bock's 26 points and five steals, while Noah Anderson had 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Tristan Larson added 14 points and eight rebounds for Wabasso, while Christian Sanow had 13 points and five rebounds.
Sleepy Eye (2-3, 1-2) hosts Nicollet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while Wabasso (2-1, 1-0) hosts GFW Monday.
GHEC 73, Madelia 56
MADELIA -- Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther downed Madelia 73-56 on Saturday afternoon in a Valley Conference boys basketball game.
Madelia (2-3) was led by Eric Anderson's 17 points and seven assists, while Josiah DeMaris had 16 points and Hayden Jones added 13.
Madelia travels to take on Martin County West on Tuesday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. Clair 73, Madelia 15
ST. CLAIR -- St. Clair rolled to a 73-15 win over Madelia on Saturday in a Valley Conference girls basketball game.
Madelia was led by Ollie Glover's 6 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Victoria Hemmingson added 4 points and Corban Tatro had six rebounds.
Madelia hosts Martin County West on Monday night.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Mankato East 1, New Ulm 0
NEW ULM -- No. 8-ranked Mankato East/Loyola held off New Ulm 1-0 on Saturday in a nonconference girls hockey game.
East's lone goal of the game came in the third period from McKenzie Keller.
Ava Brennan stopped 29 shots in net for the Eagles, now 5-5 on the year.
New Ulm is at Delano Thursday.
