Knights battle Lions to scoreless tie

NEW ULM -- A very intense game of the nonconference women's soccer game took place on Saturday at the Martin Luther College soccer pitch as the Knights took on Finlandia.
It was a battle to the very end as both teams played a solid game from start to finish, ending with a 0-0 tie.
While the game ended in a tie, the game stats were off the charts with precise plays by many players. The Lions got in 14 total shot attempts and the Knights 20.
MLC goalie Grace Sievert had seven saves, while Aspen Wallin had nine saves for Finlandia.
"We knew it was a very closely matched game, and they had some players on their team that could really move the ball quickly, long, and fast," MLC head coach Jeff Schone said. "So I'm just so happy it was such a great game."
While assisting their goalies block the countless shots, the Lions received six corner kicks while the Knights had two.
Both teams came to play and win, keeping the heat on each other throughout the entire game. Whether it was a signature turn and go or a natural header to block a pass, the skills were seen up and down the pitch.
The Knights did a great job working together to mark up or create a wall by goal during sideline throws and corner kicks, while the Lions showed great team communication and speed.
Towards the last few seconds of the game, both teams shined as Anna Borgwardt from the Knights did a throw-in and her team was at the ready to receive the ball. However, the Lions were right there ready to intercept. Borgwardt threw to Tabitha Gregorius, who shot up to goal. Wallin caught it, however, and punted it straight back to midfield.
"It really proved to be a good game," Finlandia head coach Thomas Goodman said. "Low on fouls, good pressure on both sides, good passing, everything it was a great game to watch. I know people don't like the 0-0 but, hey, it was a great game."
Overall it was a great win for all as no team lost and all players played their hearts out.
MLC's next game is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Buena Vista College.
