NEW ULM — Kaden Larson scattered three St. Peter hits while striking out eight and the bottom third of the New Ulm VFW Gold batting order collected four of the seven hits as VFW Gold blanked St. Peter 3-0 Thursday afternoon at Mueller Park.

Larson got the complete-game win for VFW Gold, now 13-11 on the season.

Sam Moelter took the loss for St. Peter.

Parker Kamm had two hits and scored two runs for New Ulm, with Logan Kreilkamp doubling.

“Kaden Larson pitched a great game for us,” VFW Gold coach Collin Helget said. “He threw a lot of strikes, especially early in the count, and our defense made the plays behind him. I told our guys that the biggest number on the scoreboard was the zero on the bottom right as far as the errors.”

Larson was in control for most of the game, but the left-hander had to work his way out of St. Peter threats in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the fifth, a leadoff walk, a wild pitch and a two-out free pass had St. Peter runners on first and second before Larson got the final out of the inning on his seventh strikeout of the game.

In the sixth, Kaden Guida laced a one-out triple. A groundout got the second out before Larson issued his third walk of the game.

But Larson’s eighth strikeout of the game ended the inning.

“If he got into a tight spot, he was able to battle back,” Helget said. “He kept attacking the zone.”

Meanwhile, Larson was getting help offensively from his seven, eight and nine hitters in the lineup.

No. 7 hitter Parker Kamm led off the third with a single and took second on a passed ball.

No. 9 hitter Kreilkamp brought him in with a double to right.

VFW Gold tacked on two more runs in the fifth with Kamm again sparking the scoring.

Kamm and Zach Paszkiewicz each singled. Kamm would come around to score on a Jake Finstad single.

Paszkiewicz then trotted home on a Zach Riederer infield hit for a 3-0 cushion.

Helget was happy with the bottom part of the order’s production.

“That is what it is going to take moving forward,” Helget said. “We do not have a lot of games left before the playoffs start, so we need everyone chipping in. It is good to see everyone contribute tonight.”

VFW Gold hosts Mankato West Saturday at Mueller Park at 10 a.m. for a doubleheader before beginning districts next Friday in New Ulm.
