NEW ULM — One day removed from Brandon Schmitz’s standout performance on the mound, it was Mark Anderson’s turn to shine on Tuesday at Mueller Park.

And shine Anderson did.

Behind Anderson’s nine-strikeout no-hitter, Sleepy Eye shut out Madelia 10-0 in five innings in the Division 2 East Sub, Sub-State Baseball Tournament championship game Tuesday.

Schmitz threw a complete-game one-hitter on Monday and Anderson finished up the tournament with a five-inning no-no Tuesday night. Anderson allowed one walk in the third inning to Madelia pitcher Zach Jacob.

“It was kind of just getting my fastball going early and then I’d come later with off-speed, get them out in front of the ball and stuff like that,” Anderson said. “If that didn’t work, I’d come back with fastball and that seemed to be working.”

Sleepy Eye head coach Brandon Streich had much to be happy about after Tuesday’s win.

For starters, his squad ended Tuesday as the East Sub, Sub-State champions. Secondly, his team finished the tournament outscoring opponents 34-2. Sleepy Eye got an 18-2 win over Blue Earth on Sunday, a 6-0 shutout over Springfield on Monday and the 10-0 shutout Tuesday.

“I’ve always said that the three facets of baseball are offense, defense and pitching and we do all three of them very well,” Streich said. “We seem to be hitting our stride offensively. We’ve pitched well all year, played good defense all year, our hitting has been kind of hit or miss some of the time. But I think our hitting, our aggressiveness is really starting to take over and hopefully we can continue that momentum into the postseason.”

Other than the one walk, it was smooth sailing for Anderson and his defense, who made some fine plays behind him. One particular play came in the third inning after that walk.

With Jacob on first, Noel Davila hit a short fly ball to right. Right fielder Austin Uecker ran in and sprawled out for the ball, appearing to make a diving catch before throwing back to first to tag Jacob out on a double play.

The play wasn’t ruled a catch, however. In the confusion, Jacob was called out on the tag at first base while Davila was tagged out halfway to first for the third out of the inning.

Sleepy Eye’s offense, which collected at least two hits each inning and finished with 15 hits total, helped Anderson’s cause. Anderson helped his own cause at the plate also, going 2 for 4 with a triple.

Talan Helget led all Sleepy Eye bats, going 3 for 4 with a game-ending RBI single to right-center.

Marcus Martinez was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a double also for Sleepy Eye, while Arian Saenz was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Winsten Nienhaus was 2 for 3.

“We kind of set our goals on this at the start of the year since we lost last year, we’ve just been looking straight at this,” Anderson said. “This was our first goal. Our end goal is hopefully get all the way to state and hopefully win that. But it’s just one stepping stone on the way to it.”

Sleepy Eye took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third after an RBI triple by Cody Schultz and an RBI double by Saenz. An RBI double by Martinez put Sleepy Eye up 3-0 in the second inning before a three-run third, led by RBI singles from Martinez and Jon Peterman, gave Sleepy Eye a 6-0 lead.

Caden Evers singled in a run to make the score 7-0 in the fourth before Uecker’s two-run single and Helget’s RBI single moments later ended the game early.

With the win, Sleepy Eye will hold a higher seed in the Sub-State tournament, which begins in Pipestone on Sunday.

“There’s different opponents and different competition that we’re not used to seeing, so hopefully we can play Sleepy Eye baseball and hopefully our end game is going to state and we can reach it,” Streich said.

Madelia, Springfield and Redwood Falls also all qualified for the Sub-State tourney with their finishes in the East Sub, Sub-State tourney.
