Saturday area roundup: VFW Gold goes 1-1, eliminated from St. Cloud tourney

ST. CLOUD -- New Ulm VFW Gold went 1-1 on Saturday at a tournament in St. Cloud, defeating Forest Lake 11-3 in six innings to start the day before falling to St Cloud Red 8-0 to end the day.

The loss ended VFW Gold's time in the tournament with a 1-2 record.

In the win over Forest Lake, Blaine Olson was 3 for 3 with three RBIs to lead VFW Gold at the plate. Zach Riederer, Jake Finstad, Lucas Suess, Levi Franta and Parker Kamm each had two hits for VFW Gold, with Riederer driving in three runs. Cody Serbus also had a double and two RBIs for VFW Gold.

Olson got the win in all six innings, giving up one earned run on eight hits and three walks while striking out six.

Kaden Larson took the loss in three innings of work against St. Cloud Red, giving up four earned runs while striking out four. Finstad, Logan Mielke, Kamm and Matthew Seidl each had a single for VFW Gold's four hits in the game.

VFW Gold will host Willmar at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson Park.

Sleepy Eye VFW 1

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Brandon Valley Lynx baseball team defeated Sleepy Eye VFW 9-1 in five innings on Saturday in a Mid-Summer Classic tournament game.

Sleepy Eye was held to three hits in the loss, with Kameron Kosak doubling and Kayden Klein and Brandon Braulick both singling. Klein also had an RBI.

Cody Schultz took the loss in 1/3 of an inning, giving up four earned runs and striking out one. Cole Eckstein pitched 4 1/3 innings for Sleepy Eye and gave up two earned runs while fanning one.

SF Post 15 East 0

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Sleepy Eye Junior Legion baseball team shut out SF Post 15 East 11-0 in six innings on Saturday at the Mid-Summer Classic tournament.

Isaac Lendt got the win in all six innings, giving up three hits and five walks while striking out three. Austin Uecker was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead Sleepy Eye at the plate, while Mark Anderson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Marcus Martinez also doubled and had two RBIs.

Searles 19, Courtland 15

The Searles Grizzlies Jr. bi-county team survived an offensive shootout on Friday night as it came away with a 19-15 win over Courtland.

Justin Berg was 4 for 5 with seven RBIs to lead Searles, while AJ Kauffman was 2 for 3 with four RBIs. David Wilfahrt also was 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Searles.

Searles' next game is at home 7:30 p.m. Monday night.
