Sleepy Eye Jr. Legion downs Alexandria, falls to Mankato West to finish JUMC 3-1

NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye Junior Legion started its Junior Upper Miwdwest Classic Saturday off on the right foot with a 14-1 blowout win over Alexandria in five innings at Mueller Park.

The win moved Sleepy Eye on to a winner’s pool game with Mankato West later that evening at Mueller Park, where West won 10-2 to eliminate Sleepy Eye from the tournament and move on to Sunday.

In the win over Alexandria, Talan Helget got the win in all five innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits while striking out seven. He was also Sleepy Eye’s biggest hitters in the game, ging 4 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Arian Saenz was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored also for Sleepy Eye, while Jonny Petermann and Cody Schultz each had two hits.

Marcus Martinez took the loss for Sleepy Eye against West, pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up eight earned runs on nine hits. Winsten Nienhaus pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief, giving up one earned run.

Helget was 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored to lead Sleepy Eye against West, while Nienhaus was 1 for 2 with a walk.

Sleepy Eye is now 7-1 on the season and hosts Hutchinson at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
