NEW ULM — Four New Ulm batters each had two hits and right-hander Carter Lang scattered six Waseca hits as the Eagles won their second straight game of the season and first in the Big South Conference West with an 11-1 win over the Bluejays Tuesday afternoon at Mueller Park.

The game was stopped after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Lang struck out five Bluejays hitters in getting the win as New Ulm improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Tyson Reger took the loss for Waseca.

Maddox Mortenson, Jace Schaefer, Jaden Drill and Lang each had two hits. Mortenson had a double and Lang had a triple.

Schaefer drove in three runs with Drill driving in two runs.

“The kids drove the ball to the opposite field today and that was good to see,” New Ulm coach Kevin Briggs said. “We were on base every inning putting pressure on them. Their pitchers had to throw strikes and when they did we hit pretty well.”

The Eagles, who host Marshall at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at New Ulm High School, jumped on Reger, Waseca’s starter, for two runs in the first inning.

Mortenson singled and swiped second. He took third on a Schaefer sacrifice bunt and came home on a Drill single to center.

Lang followed that with a base hit before Jack Albrecht walked to load the bases.

A walk to Ayden Jensen made it 2-0.

Waseca cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second before the Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan Wiltscheck led off with a walk, stole second and took third on an error. He scored on a Mortenson double before a Schaefer single scored Mortenson.

New Ulm added three more runs in the home half of the third,

Jensen and Lucas Suess led off with the Eagles fifth and sixth hits of the game. Wiltscheck coaxed a walk to load the bases.

A Schaefer two-run single ended Reger’s day on the mound. Reliever Jarrett Ahlschlager uncorked a wild pitch for a 7-1 New Ulm lead.

A Waseca error in the fourth added another run before the Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Drill RBI double, a Lang triple and a wild pitch.

Briggs was happy with the job by Lang on the mound.

“We need him to develop into one of our top two pitchers and he is working his way towards that,” Briggs said. “We have Marshall here Thursday and they are perennially a good team, it will be a good battle.”
