Area roundup: Coil throws 5-inning no-hitter in win for Madelia

Prep softball

Madelia 11, HL-O/F 0, 5 inn.

OKABENA — Behind Emma Coil’s five-inning no-hitter, Madelia cruised to an 11-0 win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in five innings of nonconference softball action.

Coil struck out 10 and walked two in the win. She also had three hits to lead the Blackhawks at the plate, while Malia Schwanke and Corban Tatro each had two hits. Tatro had two RBIs also.

Madelia (2-3) next has a home doubleheader with St. Clair/Loyola on Tuesday.

Wabasso 16, Montevideo 4, 5 inn.

WABASSO — Wabasso cruised to a 16-4 win over Montevideo on Friday in nonconference softball action.

Avery Carlson got the win, striking out six. She also had a triple at the plate. Sophia Hanna was 3 for 4 with a homer also for Wabasso, while Addisyn Hillesheim was 3 for 3, Sara Carlson was 2 for 3, Kelsey Frank was 2 for 4 with a double and Macy Rohlik had a pair of hits.

Wabasso (8-3) hosts Springfield on Thursday.

Prep baseball

Madelia 27, HL-O/F 7, 5 inn.

HERON LAKE — Madelia coasted to a 27-7 win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Friday in nonconference baseball action.

Carter Florez got the win for Madelia in 1 1/3 innings of relief, allowing no earned runs on two walks and three hits while fanning two. Dylan Grev had three doubles, a triple and six RBIs for the Blackhawks in a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate. Jake Lehman also had three hits and four RBIs for Madelia, while Eric Anderson was 4 for 5 with three RBIs and Blake Altenburg was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Florez was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Kaden Johnson also had a hit, three walks and four RBIs for Madelia.

Madelia (4-1) travels to take on Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman on Tuesday.

RCW 4, Wabasso 0

RENVILLE — Renville County West shut out Wabasso 4-0 on Friday in a nonconference baseball game.

Joe Liebl had Wabasso’s two hits for the games on a pair of singles. He also took the loss on the mound in five innings of work, giving up seven hits and five walks for three earned runs while fanning one.

Springfield boys’ 190, SEU 191

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield eked by Sleepy Eye United with a 190-191 win in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ golf meet on Friday.

SEU’s Carson Erickson was the medalist, shooting a 44. Springfield’s Christopher Thram and Carter Asmus both shot a 45 to finish tied for second, while SEU’s Sam Herzog shot a 46 to take fourth.

CM boys’ 212, GFW 221, Wabasso 248

SANBORN — The Cedar Mountain boys’ turned in a 212 to defeat Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop and Wabasso on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet at Farmers Golf & Health Club.

Nate Teneyck of GFW was the medalist with a 46, while Cedar Mountain’s Ryan Kevelin shot a 49 to finish second and GFW’s Cole Jacobson shot a 53 to take third. Wabasso’s top boy golfer was Alex Miret Alvarez, who shot a 57 to finish just under Cedar Mountain’s Cade Schiller (56).

GFW’s Jenna Schweiss shot a 60 to be the girls’ medalist, while Cedar Mountain’s Morgan Engholm and Wabasso’s Chloe Rohlik both shot a 61 to tie for second.

College softball

UNW 9, MLC 5

MLC 11, NCU 10 (8 innings)

ST. PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS — The Martin Luther College softball team split day one of the UMAC Crossover event, losing game one 9-5 at University of Northwestern (UNW) before winning 11-10 at North Central in extra innings.

The Knights fell into an early deficit and could not claw their way back in a 9-5 loss to UNW in the opener.

The Eagles started strong, scoring three times in the first inning and adding two more in the second to take a 5-0 lead.

MLC rallied in the fourth inning, scoring twice thanks to an RBI-single from Elena Hoffman and an RBI-double from Lexi Fischer, and then answered a run by the Eagles in the bottom half of the inning with two more runs in the fifth thanks to a pair of wild pitches to cut the UNW lead to 6-4.

The Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth, however, off MLC pitcher Jessica Horn (2-8), and then held the Knights to one run in the final two frames to secure the win.

Jordyn Heckendorf led the Knights at the plate with three hits, while Fischer added two hits. Horn went the distance in the circle, allowing nine runs on 15 hits.

MLC closed the day by rallying to defeat NCU 11-10 in extra innings.

The teams went back and forth throughout the game, trading the lead with big innings in difficult conditions. The Knights jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, but NCU came back with six runs to take a 6-4 advantage. After Emmalee Mindock and Anna Busch put the Knights back in front with a pair of RBI-hits in the third, NCU answered with three runs to take a two-run lead into the seventh inning.

Trailing 9-7 in their final at bat, Fischer came through with a two-run home run to tie the game, and the Knights added another run in the inning to take a 10-9 lead on a Hoffman ground rule double.

The Rams answered in the bottom of the seventh with a run to force extra innings, but Emma Berg put the Knights back on top with an RBI-double, and Madison Uhlenbrauck (3-8) closed the game with the final outs to secure the win.

Heckendorf, Hoffman, Berg and Mindock each finished with three hits to lead the Knights at the plate. Uhlenbrauck went the distance in the circle to earn the win.

MLC moved to 7-17 on the season and 2-8 in UMAC play with the split.

BLHS 5, Wabasso 4 (Game 1)

BLHS 16, Wabasso 13 (Game 2)

WABASSO — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart swept Wabasso in a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday, winning the first game 5-4 and the second game 16-13.

In Game 1, Chase Irbeck took the loss in 1/3 innings of relief for Calvin Hanna, giving up two hits and two walks for three earned runs. Hanna pitched six innings and gave up three hits and four walks for no earned runs while fanning five.

At the plate for Wabasso in Game 1, Hunter Goblirsch tripled and scored a run, while Adryen Tietz had a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored.

BLHS’s Caleb Weispfenning got the win in Game 1 in two innings of relief, giving up two hits and a walk for one earned run while striking out four. BLHS was ledat the plate by Eli Kirtz, who had a pair of singles.

In Game 2, Goblirsch took the loss in 2 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and two walks for three earned runs while fanning two. Noah Anderson also pitched two innings and gave up four earned runs while striking out four. Anderson also had two hits, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored for Wabasso, while Joe Liebl had two hits and two runs scored and Devlin Wagner had a triple, a single, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Kirtz got the win in Game 2 for BLHS as well, pitching three innings and giving up five hits and two walks for one earned run while fanning three. Connor McColley had three singles and an RBI for BLHS in Game 2, while Chase Hubin had three hits and three RBIs and Weispfenning had two hits and four RBIs.

St. Mary’s 11,

Cathedral 8

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s came back win the second game of a home doubleheader with New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday night, winning Game 2 by a score of 11-8.

The Greyhounds won the first game 16-6.

In Game 2, Kallie Zarn led the Knights at the plate with a 3-for-4 game and two RBIs. Maya Nelson was also 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Knights, while Allie Labat walked three times and added a hit and two RBIs. The Knights rallied for eight runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead over the Greyhounds.

For Cathedral, Lily Franta homered and had two hits and Jenna Hotovec had two hits. Kiah Helget added two RBIs for Cathedral.
