BELLE PLAINE — New Ulm topped Belle Plaine 11-1 on Thursday in a nonconference baseball game.

Jaden Drill got the win for New Ulm in 4 1/3 innings of work, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks while fanning eight.

Carter Lang led the Eagles at the plate, going 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Drill was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Ayden Jensen was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Mankato Loyola 3

MANKATO — Madelia defeated Mankato Loyola on Thursday in a Valley Conference baseball game at Boyer Field.

Dylan Grev got the complete-game win, giving up one earned run on four hits while striking out 11. Eric Anderson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Blackhawks at the plate.

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye swept Minnesota Valley Lutheran 8-6 and 9-3 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader.

In Game 1, Arian Saenz got the win in 5 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and four walks for five runs while fanning 11. He also was 3 fr 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Jake Price had two doubles and two RBIs.

For MVL in Game 1, Josh Giefer took the loss in 4 2/3 innings of work, giving up 10 hits and four walks for four earned runs while fanning five. Kaiden Hammerschmidt had a double and two RBIs for MVL, while Zach Riederer was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Nick Mielke got the win in Game 2, pitching 6 1/3 innings and giving up six hits and two walks for no earned runs. He struck out 12. Jackson Huiras led the Indians at the plate in Game 2, going 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI while Price had a double and three RBIs.

Justin Ziemer took the loss in Game 2 for MVL, pitching five innings and giving up six hits and a walk for five earned runs while striking out two. Cole Thompson was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for MVL in Game 2, while Giefer had a double and an RBI.

Sleepy Eye (4-1) hosts New Ulm Cathedral at 5 p.m. Friday, while MVL hosts Wabasso on Monday.

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 6-1 and 5-4 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference baseball doubleheader.

In Game 1, Kyle Quesenberry got the complete-game win for the Tigers, giving up one unearned run on three hits while striking out 18. Jakob Nachreiner led the Tigers at the plate in Game 1, going 4 for 5 with two RBIs, while Isaak Lothert was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

For GFW in Game 1, Dominic Rose took the loss in four innings, giving up seven hits and four walks for four earned runs while fanning five. Mikal Nordlund led GFW at the plate with two hits, including a double.

In Game 2, Brendon Buerkle got the win in an inning of relief, striking out one and giving up two hits. Tate Mathiowetz, Buerkle and Kade Nachreiner each had two hits for the Tigers in Game 2, while Luke Boyle led the team with three hits and an RBI.

For GFW in Game 2, Zach Schwarzrock took the loss in 6 1/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and three walks for five earned runs while fanning four. Rose was 1 for 3 with two RBIs to lead GFW at the plate.

Springfield hosts Windom at 5 p.m. Friday, while GFW is at Renville County West on Monday.

Fairmont boys, girls take first at New Ulm Invite

NEW ULM — The New Ulm boys’ and girls’ golf teams hosted an invite on Thursday at New Ulm County Club, with the Fairmont boys (316) and girls (363) both taking first.

Blue Earth took second for the boys (354), while the New Ulm boys took third (370). Fairmont’s Matthew Cone was the medalist for the boys, while the New Ulm boys’ top finishers were Evan Griebel (86) and Will Fossen (89).

Following the Fairmont girls’ team was St. Peter (388), Blue Earth (406) and New Ulm (419). St. Peter’s Adrianna Bixby was the girls’ medalist with an 84, while New Ulm’s top girls’ golfers were Paige Dreckman (94) and Katie Wilker (104).

Springfield boys take 1st at BLHS Invite

BUFFALO LAKE — The Springfield boys’ golf team shot a 187 to take first at Oakdale Golf Club during Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart’s Tomahawk Conference Invite on Thursday.

Springfield was followed by New Ulm Cathedral (191), Minnesota Valley Lutheran (192), Wabasso (231) and BLHS (244).

The medalist was MVL’s Ben Pearson with a 38, while Springfield’s Christpher Thram followed with a 43 and Cathedral’s Will Mart took third with a 44.

The girls’ teams at the Invite were all incomplete other than Cathedral, who saw Kayla Goblirsch shoot a 43 to finish as the girls’ medalist. MVL’s Abbie Riederer followed Goblirsch up with a 54 for second, while Wabasso’s Chloe Rohlik finished third with a 60 and MVL’s Mackenzie Merseth took fourth with a 61.

Cedar Mountain boys 220, GFW 230

WINTHROP — The Cedar Mountain boys’ golf team defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference golf meet at Winthrop Golf Club.

Blake Schueller of Cedar Mountain was the medalist for the boys with a 52, while Cedar Mountain’s Ryan Kevelin shot a 54 to finish second. GFW’s Nate TenEyke (55) and Cole Jacobson (56) finished third and fourth, respectively.

For the girls, Morgan Engholm was the medalist with a 56, while Cedar Mountain’s Keanna Hultquist shot a 59 to take second. While the GFW girls’ team was incomplete, GFW’s Jenna Schweiss (60) and Marti Jacobson (61) finished third and fourth, respectively.

WABASSO — Wabasso swept Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader.

In Game 1, Avery Carlson got the win in the circle and was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Sara Carlson had a triple for Wabasso in Game 1, while Annabelle Struntz doubled.

In Game 2, Avery Carlson got the win again for the Rabbits, giving up three hits while striking out six. Callie Burns led the Rabbits with a pair of hits, while Sophia Hanna had a triple and a single. Kelsey Frank also doubled for the Rabbits.

Wabasso (7-3) hosts Monetvideo on Friday.

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield swept Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference softball doubleheader contest.

Jaeli Richert went 2 for 3 in Game 1 for the Tigers. Megan Ploeger had a double with three RBIs. Brooklyn Sturm, Ella Geis, and Maddy Digmann had one RBI apiece. Sturm and Digmann each had two hits. Jaeli Richert got the win in seven innings, striking out nine and allowing two earned runs.

Morgan Aylsworth had one RBI, while Halle Bleick had three RBIs for the Thunderbirds. Brooklyn Werner pitched six innings in the loss and allowed five earned runs while fanning four.

In Game 2, Sturm and Digmann each had a double. Sturm also had a triple. Jalivia Richert got the win in Game 2, striking out eight.

Jessica Willegal was 2 for 2 for GFW in Game 2. Bleick took the loss in Game 2, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while fanning one.

Nicollet 9, MCW 4

SHERBURN — Nicollet topped Martin County West 9-4 on Thursday in a Valley Conference softball game.

Hayley Selby got the complete-game win for Nicollet, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out 13. Leah Bode and Marah Hulke led the Raiders at the plate with three hits apiece, while Brooklyn Bode, Samantha Kettner and Madi Rosin each had two hits.

LCWM 12, Madelia 0

MADELIA — Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial shut out Madelia 12-0 on Thursday in a Valley Conference softball game.

Emma Coil singled for Madelia’s lone hit of the game. Coil also took the loss in the circle for Madelia, giving up six earned runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out one.

Madelia (1-3, 0-1) is at Okabena for another game Friday.

Boys’ tennis

St. Peter 7, New Ulm 0

ST. PETER — St. Peter shut out the New Ulm boys’ tennis team on Thursday with a 7-0 win in Big South Conference boys’ tennis action.
