Mental errors hurt Eagles in comeback win for White Hawks

NEW ULM — Mound Westonka scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to erase a 4-1 New Ulm lead on the way to a 6-4 win Friday in a nonconference baseball game at Mueller Park.

Cam Peterson got the win for the White Hawks in relief.

Jace Schaefer was tagged with the loss for the Eagles in relief.

Carter Lang and Jaden Drill each had two hits for the Eagles, who fall to 0-2 on the season.

Tyler Van-Bon had two hits for Mound Westonka.

“Credit to the players for both teams for playing in these conditions,” New Um coach Kevin Briggs said. “It was a good baseball game for both sides — I am glad that we got the game in.”

New Ulm scored two runs in the first when Jack Albrecht walked and Lang doubled. Albrecht scored the first run on a wild pitch before Lang raced home later on a second wild pitch.

The Eagles made it 3-0 in the second when Jaden Miller reached on an error, went to third on a throwing error by the White Hawks catcher and scored on an Albrecht groundout.

Mound Westonka cut the lead to 3-1 in the third on a Simon James RBI single.

But the Eagles regained a two-run lead in the bottom of the inning on a Jace Schaefer double.

But that was the last time New Ulm scored a run in the game.

Meanwhile, the White Hawks pushed across four runs in the fifth, with an error playing a big part in the scoring.

Kade Tappen doubled off of Schaefer, who had replaced starter Jack Albrecht in the fourth.

A single by Colin Richie scored a run. A one-out infield error kept the inning alive as Mound scored three more runs to take a 5-4 lead.

“On the field you can see it is still early in the season,” Briggs said. “For them it was a lot of physical errors (five in the game) and for us it was mental errors. Our error in the fifth led to their big inning for them.”

Mound Westonka added a run in the sixth for a 6-4 lead.

“We need to do better, and mentally is where we have to improve right now,” Briggs said. “It is going to be a journey, but if this team will commit and not accept where they are, we willl be tough.”
