NEW ULM -- Despite chilly wind gusts on Wednesday, Bethany Lutheran College's bats stayed hot against Martin Luther College in both games of an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at MLC.
The Vikings swept the Knights 18-2 and 21-1, with both games ending in five innings.
In the first game of the afternoon, BLC (18-11, 8-2) was on the board right away in the first inning for three runs, led by Kaitlyn Doucette two-run single.
BLC got a double steal of second and home for a run before Eden Ambrose doubled in a run for a 5-0 BLC lead after two. The Vikings added five more runs in the third for a 10-0 lead before a six-run fourth inning had them up 17-0. The six-run inning was highlighted with a two-run triple off the bat of Haley Stockman.
The Knights (5-15, 0-6) weren't going to be shut out, though, and got an RBI single by Emmalee Mindock before a wild pitch scored Emma Berg in the bottom of the fourth for a 17-2 score.
BLC ended the scoring in the fifth inning on an RBI double into the gap in left-center by Lizzie Oothoudt.
BLC's Haley Ditch, a 2021 Minnesota Valley Lutheran grad, had a pinch-hit single in the fourth inning of the first game and also walked in a run in the second game.
Katelyn Halbach was 3 for 4 to lead the Vikings at the plate in Game 1. Kayla Senne pitched four innings and allowed four hits and two walks for two earned runs in BLC's Game 1 win. She struck out four.
Madison Uhlenbrauck took the loss for MLC in Game 1, allowing 21 hits and two walks for 12 earned runs while fanning three.
In the second game of the day and with the wind picking up even more, the Vikings struck again in the first inning for two runs after a two-run triple by Ambrose.
Jordyn Heckendorf doubled to lead off the bottom of the first for the Knights before Kylie Wolf singled up the middle to score Heckendorf and have the Knights down 2-1.
Unfortunately for the Knights, their scoring ended there as the Vikings rolled to the win behind a five-run second inning, a six-run third inning and an eight-run fifth inning.
Wolf was 2 for 3 at the plate for the Knights in Game 2. Jessica Horn pitched three innings for the Knights and took the loss, giving up 12 earned runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out three. Lexi Fischer, a 2019 MVL grad, pitched the final two innings against BLC.
Alyssa Kosta got the win for the Vikings in Game 1, giving up one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out three. Olivia Fritz led the Vikings at the plate in Game 2, going 3 for 4 with an RBI. Kaija Mork was 2 for 2 with a homer and four RBIs also for BLC in the second game.
MLC, now done for the season in home games, will next travel to take on Minnesota Morris in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
