Mathiowetz, Riederer, Hesse highlight All-Journal Girls’ Basketball

First Team

Madison Mathiowetz, Sr.,

G, St. Mary’s

Mathiowetz, Sleepy Eye St. Marys’ all-time leading scorer, finished her career with 3,762 points. A 2021-2022 Miss Basketball Candidate, Mathiowetz averaged 34.9 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 4.9 apg and 3.8 spg.

In addition to leading the school in career points and being fourth in the state for career points for girls’ basketball, Mathiowetz also leads St. Mary’s in career rebounds (1,343), assists (498) and steals (458).

Coming into this season, Mathiowetz was a two-time All-Journal Player of the Year, a two-time Class A All-State Team player and was the Prep Hoops Class A Player of the Year last season. She was also recently named the Tomahawk Conference Player of the Year for the fourth year in a row.

Abbie Riederer, Sr., G, MVL

Riederer finished her impressive career at Minnesota Valley Lutheran as the school’s all-time leading scorer in girls’ basketball history with 1,747 career points. Riederer averaged 20.2 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 4.2 spg and 3 apg.

Riederer was a three-time unanimous Tomahawk All-Conference player and an honorable mention in the conference her freshman year and an All-Journal First Team player in 2020 and 2021. She will attend Upper Iowa University on a basketball scholarship this fall.

MVL head coach Rollin Timm said that Riederer has “really put in the work and has set an example for the rest of the team.”

In addition to leading the school in girls’ career points, Riederer also finished eighth in career rebounds with 567, fourth in career steals with 324 and ninth in assists with 259.

Kadence Hesse, So.,

G, Sleepy Eye

Hesse led the Indians this season with 21.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg and 4 apg. The team leader in points, rebounds and assists this season, Hesse also was a top threat on defense and led the team in steals with 248 (3.7 spg).

Hesse passed 1,000 career points this season as well and was a unanimous selection for the Tomahawk All-Conference Team for the second year in a row and is a three-time All-Conference player total.

She was also an All-Journal Second Team member in 2020 and was an All-Journal First Team member in 2021.

Brynn Busse, Jr., G, GFW

Busse finished her junior year averaging 19.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg and 4.1 apg.

The three-time Tomahawk All-Conference guard also showed her defensive ability as she finished the season with 3.5 spg and 2 bpg.

Busse currently sits third in three different career girls’ basketball categories at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop with 1,303 points, 300 assists and 266 steals.

Hayley Selby, Sr., F, Nicollet

Selby finished her career with 1,133 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. She averaged 15 ppg, 14 rpg, 3 spg and shot 52% from the floor.

The three-time Valley All-Conference player and 2019-20 All-Journal player was described by her head coach Sarah Strobel as a huge post presence that worked hard to grab rebounds in the paint despite not always being the biggest post player at 5-7.

Second Team

Morgan Hulke, Fr., G, New Ulm

Hulke finished her freshman year by leading the Eagles in scoring with 13.3 ppg and 359 points. She also led the team in free throws made with 50 and pulled ion 4.2 rpg.

Hulke was third on the team in steals with 45 and also dished out 28 assists.

Described by Eagles head coach Julie Rogers as a definite scoring threat from beyond the 3-point arc, Hulke will be one of the Eagles’ top scoring leaders next season.

Megan Sandrgren, Sr., F, Cedar Mountain

Sandgren, Cedar Mountain’s lone senior this season, finished her career with the Cougars with 1,016 career points. She averaged 18.3 ppg and 10.5 rpg this season to lead Cedar Mountain.

Sandgren also was a key player on defense with 1.4 bpg and was a Tomahawk All-Conference player this season. She was an Honorable Mention in the conference last season.

Cougars head coach Joel Christianson said that Sandgren, a leader on and off the court over the past three seasons, led the team in points, rebounds and blocks over those years and will be hard to replace next season. Sandgren also had 762 career rebounds.

Marah Hulke, Sr., G, Nicollet

Hulke finished her senior year by averaging 16 ppg, 8 rpg, 4.4 apg, 2.7 spg and 1.2 bpg. She also passed 1,000 career points this season and finished with 1,182 career points.

The 42% shooter and team captain finished as a three-time Valley All-Conference player and was described by her head coach Sarah Strobel as a unselfish leader on and off the court that could take charge when the team needed a quick shot.

Brooklyn Sturm, So.,

G, Springfield

Sturm, a two-time Tomahawk All-Conference player, averaged a double-double to lead the Tigers this season with 14.7 ppg, 10.6 rpg and 2.6 apg.

She also was key on defense for Springfield, averaging 2.6 bpg and 2.3 spg. She shot 35% from beyond the arc and 77% from the free throw line.

Brea Mertz, So., F, Sleepy Eye

Mertz was one of Sleepy Eye’s top threats consistently during her sophomore year, finishing with 16.4 ppg and 7.1 rpg. Mertz was also a key threat on defense with 2 spg and 1.4 bpg.

The 5-foot-10 forward was an Honorable Mention in the Tomahawk Conference last season, an All-Journal Second Team member last season and was a unanimous selection for the All-Conference Team this season.

Third Team

Emily Schommer, Sr.,

G, Cathedral

Schommer wrapped up her final basketball season with the Greyhounds averaging 11.6 ppg.

She also had 5.6 rpg, 2.9 apg and 2 spg while shooting 40% from the floor. While battling through injuries, Schommer was consistently one of the Greyhounds’ top players and leaders on the court as the team’s lone senior.

Greyhounds head coach Dave Wilfahrt said that Schommer contributed on and off the floor as a great role model for the team and was an instrumental part of the girls’ program.

Schommer ends her career with 714 career points.

Daviney Dreckman, So., G, New Ulm

Dreckman missed the first 10 games of the season recovering from an injury but still pulled in 62 rebounds more than the teams’ second-leading rebounder.

In 17 games this season, Dreckman averaged 11.8 ppg and 10.5 rpg in her sophomore campaign. She also shot 79.5% from the foul line and had 32 assists, 18 steals and a team-best 11 blocks.

Reagan Severson, Sr.,

G, St. Mary’s

Severson finished her senior season with 10.3 ppg, 4 rpg and 3.7 apg. The four-year starter was an Honorable Mention in the Tomahawk Conference in the 2019-20 season and a two-time All-Conference Team member the past two seasons.

She also was an All-Journal Second Team player last season and finished her career with 888 points, 370 rebounds and 367 assists.

Kaydince Thoms, Sr.,

G, Sleepy Eye

Thoms was the No. 2 guard for the Indians this season and finished her senior campaign with 12 ppg, 4.1 rpg and 2 apg.

Thoms was also a solid defender at the top of the key for Sleepy Eye, finishing the season with 3.3 spg.

For her career, Thoms had 846 points, 320 rebounds, 213 steals and 126 assists. She was also an Honorable Mention in the Tomahawk Conference this season.

Brooklyn Lewis, 8th,

G, New Ulm

Despite being an eighth-grader, Lewis became one of the Eagles’ top scoring threats this season and finished with 12.6 ppg.

She also was second on the team in assists with 62 and led the team in steals (69) and pass deflections (61). Lewis also pulled in 86 rebounds and led the team in points off of turnovers with 102.
